Our guide to the weather and climate in Corsica

A pretty island situated in the Mediterranean and positioned between France and Italy, Corsica hosts thousands of tourists every year.

This is thanks to its glorious weather, beautiful beaches, charming towns, and luscious scenery. As well as a variety of things to do all year round, it is clear to see why so many people visit this wonderful part of the world.

Are you looking for a quiet getaway that has mild winter temperatures and is a great price? Then you've hit the jackpot! Corsica in January gives you 8°c averages with 14° highs, so if you don't need blazing sunshine to know you’ll have a great holiday then this is most certainly the month to visit.

There will be 5 hours of sun per day, but you could also get a few cloudy days since rain is forecast for almost half of the month. Just be aware that you may have to change your plans last minute if the weather takes a turn, thankfully though you will always be able to find something to do.

The days will be too cool for spending any length of time on the beach and the sea, at 14° won’t have many swimmers. A walk along the sand would be nice though, and at places such as Nonza Beach where you’ll find black sand, we’re sure the clouds won’t put you off. Make sure you get chance to wander around the villages of Nonza too or climb the square tower for some impressive views. Take your raincoat and sensible shoes for a charming day out.

If you don’t mind the unpredictable weather and have simply come away for a change of scenery and to relax, then you can’t go wrong here in January.

The climate in February is much the same as in January. Highs of 13°c will tempt you outside, but again, a beach day and swimming in the sea will not be high on your list. Think about accommodation that offers a pool if you do enjoy a swim.

An extra hour of sunlight means the days are getting longer, though you’ll still get cloudy times and rain is possible for 14 days of the entire month.

The wind will be felt in February, and this will bring some fantastic waves – many visitors are here for that very reason and if that’s your kind of thing, don’t forget your wetsuit and head west for some of the best surfing conditions. If you prefer to avoid the winds as much as possible, we’d suggest staying in the south or east of the island.

On particularly cool or rainy days, you could take a trip to Maison Bonaparte located in Ajaccio. Here is where Napolean Bonaparte was born, and you can observe historic objects and discover family heritage – a treat for those who appreciate history.

Improvements to the climate are slight in March with highs of 14°c and averages of 9°. The sun will be present for 9 hours per day, giving you plenty of time to fit a variety of activities into your day. The rain will start to ease up, but it’s still worth taking a waterproof coat if you are spending a lot of time outdoors.

Roman history fans can enjoy a trip to the ruins of Aleria on the east coast. Here you’ll see the archaeological site and museum, along with some extraordinary views. Because the area is not huge, you will be able to enjoy the sites as well as walking around the village in half a day, leaving the other half open for more exploring, relaxing or dining.

It is worth noting that you will need to hire a car for this visit which is easy to do and will widen your options of exploring.

Do you need to step foot onto the beach to feel like you’ve officially arrived on holiday? If so, head to San Giovanni. Although the sea at 14° is too cold for swimming, you’ll get chance to walk along the fine white sand and marvel at the views of the rocks and coves.

Take your camera and a picnic and you’ll feel like you’ve found a hidden gem because it’ll be pretty quiet.

One of the first things you’ll notice on the island in April is the blooming colours that this season brings. Spring is here and Corsica enjoys longer days with highs of 17°c and averages of 12°.

There will be more tourists than in the previous months with the improved temperatures coaxing them to explore outdoors and visit the beaches. You may experience the odd shower of rain as it is forecast for 9 days over the 30, though this shouldn’t be something you need to worry about too much.

The same can be said about the breeze, although you may experience some more blustery winds, they won’t be enough to hinder your outdoor activities.

Thanks to its pleasant temperatures, April weather gives you the ideal opportunity to visit Bastiaa city that holds so much beauty. There are 2 beaches which are only small and relatively quiet for this time of year, showcasing the turquoise waters. But Bastia is so much more than just beaches – there are numerous places to visit that will captivate you. For instance, stroll around the Old Port or the Romieu Garden, taking in some stunning scenery and breathtaking sights of the buildings and lighthouse. Visit cathedrals and churches, as well as the citadel district and narrow, winding streets. No doubt you will be charmed and want to visit again another day.

Some say that May is the month when summer starts and with highs of 21°c we can understand why. Average temperatures in May are around 16° which will feel comfortable when exploring. With 9 hours of sun per day, you’ll have time for plenty of activities even if you see a shower or two.

Tourists might be tempted by the rise in sea temperature to take a dip. At 18° it will still seem a little cool but there are now opportunities of water sports thanks to more facilities being available.

For a lovely getaway, visit Calvi Beach, giving you white sand, clean water, and mountain views. Another stunning view is that of the citadel which can be seen from the beach. If that simply isn’t enough for you though, you can choose to hike up to the building and discover monuments, alleyways, impressive stairs, and more striking views.

The May climate is perfect for hiking and walking, but if you do get a little warm just stop at one of the restaurants or bars along the marina for a refreshing drink.

Peak season is upon us now and Corsica begins to get busier. The climate brings tourists to the island with temperatures in their 20’s and the beaches will attract more visitors.

In south Corsica, you will find Campomoro Beach – golden sand, turquoise waters, and partial shade thanks to the trees – making this a desirable spot for spending the day. The sea is now 22°c and the entrance into the water is sloped gently which makes it suitable for most. Water activities are on offer, as well as local amenities and with more mountains than high rise hotels in view, it really is a relaxing place to catch a tan.

Preferring not to lie on the beach all day, let the explorer in you conquer the hiking trails of Cavu. Wear appropriate footwear and allow for a few hours in your day where you will experience some rewarding panoramic views. You can also enjoy the river or natural pools where taking a swim and relaxing amongst the pebbly exterior is a must.

The weather is ideal in June because you’ll be able to enjoy the outdoors without it being too hot. You’ll still need your sun cream and hat if you’re out for long periods though.

Weather during July

July is one of the busiest months on the isiand of Corsica, owing to the long, sunny, and dry days. There will be 12 hours of sunshine and little, to no rain during your stay.

Temperatures between 22 and 27°c mean the beaches will be popular. You won’t notice much wind but if you do, they will be warm and pleasant. The sea is 23° and there will be plenty to do in the water.

Ostriconi Beach in the north is wonderful in the summer – with white sands, clear waters, and dunes that you can witness from above before you make your way down to find your spot. The unspoilt environment is thanks to the lack of buildings and businesses around which makes it ideal for those wanting to avoid the crowds that beaches closer to the cities will bring.

In the west coast of Corsica, you can hop on board a boat to visit the Nature Reserve of Scandola, observing the landscape and rocky formations. The colour and textures will fascinate you as they contrast with the shades of the water. Having so many restaurants, cafés, and bars open will make it difficult to choose, but if you’ve booked for a week or more, we’d recommend experiencing as much of the cuisine as possible.

Every part of the island will be accessible now and it will be buzzing from morning until night.

The high volume of tourists continues throughout August with the climate being similar to July – gloriously sunny days with highs of 27°c and schools taking their summer breaks has families flocking to the island. It’s worth noting that if you prefer a quiet getaway, this probably isn’t the month for you.

The beaches will be busy quite early in the day so it would be a good idea to arrive in the morning if you want to hire a sun lounger or umbrella, as well as being able to enjoy the beach before the midday heat reaches its hottest.

Head south to Favone Beach, where you will be met with white sand and turquoise waters. The sand is soft enough to comfortably walk on and the gentle slope into the sea means it is safe for most visitors including small children. You might want to get out of the sun for a little while and luckily there are things to do to occupy your time while seeking shade. During the hottest months the heat can be a little too much to go hiking or even walking a lengthy distance – in this case, consider hopping on the train which lets you sit back and enjoy the scenery that you’ll pass on your journey. It’s an enjoyable and unforgettable trip!

Don’t forget to factor in some shopping and bar hopping on your break too, keeping you entertained and hydrated.

The climate decreases slightly this month and officially summer comes to an end. We find this hard to believe when it is still very beautiful – average temperatures of 19°c, highs of 24°, and minimal rain mean it's t-shirts and shorts weather for a little while yet.

Nine hours of daylight gives us a sunset at around 7.30pm so you may want to incorporate this into a romantic walk along the beach after a meal for two.

The beach during the day will remain busy at the beginning of September and up until schools reopen and families return home. Lozari Beach is quite a large stretch of white sand that leads to turquoise waters and showcases wild landscape and hills. It might be a little windy during this month which can make the waves stronger. If you have enough of sunbathing, you can follow the walking trails around the beach, as well as visiting the River Reginu, Île-Rousse, and nearby restaurants.

The last weeks in September are quieter with the climate remaining pleasant – ideal for those that enjoy the sun without the crowds.

As the temperature drops in the UK, you might already be yearning for your next holiday. Well, in Corsica the temperature remains extremely pleasant, with an average of 17°c and highs of 21°

The island will be quieter now and you’ll get the chance to mingle with the locals more because some will close their businesses early after the high season.

Getting to know a place and learning its history can make for an interesting holiday, and if this sounds like your kind of break then we’d recommend visiting Bonifacio – here you can explore the old town with sites including the citadel, the Aragon staircase, the Marine Cemetery, or simply stroll through the streets.

Relaxing on the beach in October is possible during October too. Palombaggia Beach is another beautiful place located in the south. It offers light golden sand, turquoise waters, and red/orange-coloured rocks. A semi-circular cove with pine trees along the edge is the perfect spot this month when the crowds are fewer, and you can really appreciate the beauty of this beach. The sea should be warm enough at 21° to swim in and the slope is gentle enough for easy entry into the water.

Rain is forecast for 6 days over the month and you may experience lows of 12°, compare this to October in the UK though and we know where we’d rather be.

A mild climate can be expected during Vovember and although it is the start of the winter season, you’ll find the temperatures are nice enough to enjoy the outdoors. Bear in mind that you could see some rainy periods and it might be harder to predict the weather, but this shouldn’t affect you too much and November is certainly worth considering for your winter break.

Accommodation and flights will be cheaper now too, and it will be the ideal time if you prefer to holiday without the crowds.

You may not want to spend the whole day at the beach, though it will be pleasant enough for a couple of hours. Bring a jumper in case the temperatures drop down to 7°c. Highs of 17° will mean beach games or relaxing with a book are possible and some may even take a swim with the sea at 19°.

San Ciprianu Beach will be quiet and gives you white sand, clear waters, and rocky scenery. The sea is gentle and great for snorkelling.

If you do get a cloudy or windy day, you could head indoors and visit some of the museums – those in Bastia and Ajacco should stay open during November, but it is always worth checking beforehand, and when booking your trip take into consideration that many activities, restaurants, and hotels will have closed already.

In the UK people are preparing for cold temperatures and rising heating bills, but in Corsica it is surprisingly mild and you can understand why some hop on a plane for a touch of winter warmth.

Highs of 13°c and averages of 9° mean you’ll want to pack your jumpers and trousers instead of your bikinis and shorts, though if you’re willing to travel to Corsica in December, we’ll assume you aren’t coming for the red-hot climate.

Nevertheless, the calm atmosphere and fewer tourists means a peaceful and relaxing getaway. It will be too cold for the beach now, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out completely – hire a car and travel to multiple beaches where you can take in the scenery a couple. Time it right and you can watch the sunset as you stroll along the idyllic sands.

At 15°, the sea is not warm enough for swimming so think about accommodation with a pool if you enjoy a dip.

Calanche Cliffs in winter can be a breathtaking sight. You’ll need to wrap up, have decent footwear, and don’t forget your phone or camera.

The festive period makes for a lovely atmosphere in Corsica where villages and towns are decorated with lights, carol singing can be heard, and it is a joyous place to be. Top this off with a warming retreat as you bathe in the hot springs at Caldane Baths, and you’ll get an unforgettable holiday.
