Our guide to the weather and climate in Corfu

Corfu is a beautiful island to the west of the Greek mainland and is one of the most popular island destinations for UK holidaymakers. With endless stretches of sandy beaches, stunning waters, and picturesque towns and gorgeous cuisine, it's not hard to see why.

Sea temperature

Despite being the coldest month of the year, Corfu still has a lot to offer in January. Between 9 and 10°c average temperatures and 14° highs, it is still probably better than the winter weather you’re used to.

With the presence of clouds as well as rain over 12 days of the month, you will want to pack some warmer clothes and you won’t need a great deal of suncream. Winds are moderate breezes, and the sea is cold at 15°.

If you want to explore Corfu while you’re here, the winter months are some of the best to do so – you won’t get the crowds you’d see in summer, and you’ll be able to see the island from a different perspective. Discovering mountains, completing hiking trails, experiencing the cuisine, taking a stroll on the beach, and even engaging with the locals, should be on your agenda – just prepare yourself for a mixture of weather.

You shouldn’t have any problem finding accommodation this month and you’ll most likely find it at a really good price.

Sea temperature

The temperature creeps 1 degree higher this month, giving you an average of 10°c. The sun will be present for 5 hours and while there’s a good chance of rain, you’ll still enjoy exploring the island. The sea is still too cold to swim in so it may be worth booking accommodation with a heated pool.

As long as you pack well, you’ll be comfortable enough to visit the many sights Corfu has to offer. Head to Corfu Town (known locally as Kerkyra), the capital city where you will find a lot more places open in the colder months. The streets here are narrow and charming, so grab your waterproof jacket and enjoy a laid-back stroll in a beautiful part of Corfu.

You won’t get queues or crowds of people, and it will give you the opportunity to visit some wonderful places, such as the Old Fortress, a historical monument that dominates the east side. Visit during the day for some stunning views and experiencing it at night will be equally as enchanting when you can view the entire landmark lit up. There are also churches and museums offering architecture and culture.

Wrap up well and you’ll be able to take a stroll on the beach – Dassia Beach on the east coast has a backdrop of greenery that will make for some lovely views. In February you can forget the weather back home and enjoy the peace and quiet of the island.

Again, this month will marginally change in terms of temperature. 11.5°c will be the average, with highs of 16°. The hours of sunshine will increase to 6 per day – Spring begins to take the place of winter and you’ll find it pleasant to travel at this time.

While you probably won’t want to sunbathe just yet, you’ll be able to enjoy a walk along the beach. Small Nissaki Beach is a sheltered, pebble beach with not much wind, making it ideal for a romantic stroll or quiet getaway. You will even get chance to dip your toes in the water, but not much more!

Be prepared for cloudy days and if you do get caught in a shower, head indoors. There are a range of places you can visit, including the Museum of Asian Art, the Archilleion Palace, or the Liston – running down one side of Spianada Square, this historical building will give you shelter in one of the many restaurants that occupy the span of it.

The weather may be a little unpredictable as the seasons change, but from March onwards you’ll see more sunshine and less rain.

Sea temperature

Now this is what we like – a bigger jump in temperatures. Highs of 19°c are ideal for an April holiday and with Easter on the horizon you’ll find Corfu starts to get a little busier.

Eight hours of sun means you can fit a lot in every day of your trip. Just bear in mind that April will still bring some showers, so pack wisely and be prepared to change your plans if the rain does make an appearance.

The sea is probably still a little cool at 17° and the wind will blow up to a moderate breeze. So, while you won’t want to brave the sea and it is still not considered sunbathing weather with average temperatures at 14°, the beaches won’t be too crowded and are still tempting to relax on or play games with the kids. Agios Gordios on the west coast offers good facilities, golden sand, and clear waters, as well as a nudist area at one end of the bay.

Preferring to discover something new, why not visit Gardiki Castle in the south. Giving you some picturesque views, great walking trails, and historical monuments to enjoy while the climate isn’t too hot.

Average highs will reach the 20’s in May as it starts to feel like we’re heading for summer. Daily temperatures of 18-19°c with 10 hours of sun per day means more people will travel to Corfu. The days of rain will fall to around 8 over the whole month and blue skies will dominate as May progresses.

Head to the beach and you’ll get chance to work on your tan. The sea will now be an inviting 21° and perfect for a swim. Glyfada Beach is ideal to spend your days because it caters for so many.

It can be quite busy and loud during the day, so we wouldn’t recommend here if you want peace and quiet, but for those of you that have children who enjoy paddling, teenagers that want to try water sports, and adults that want to be in the midst of all the fun, this west coast beach with its hillside views, soft sand and array of amenities is perfect.

May is a great time to visit the island without it being too hot, and with it not being quite the peak season, you’ll get to enjoy a holiday without too much hustle and bustle. If family life means you can only travel during school holidays, just bear in mind that the prices may rise at some point this month.

Summer has arrived and tourists descend on Corfu to make the most of the impressive 10 hours per day of sunshine. If you love the hotter climate then you’re in luck – with highs of 28°c throughout June and average temperatures of 22°, you’ll be able to bask on the beach or explore the island with little chance of rain.

If you don’t mind the crowds, we’d suggest visiting Sidari Beach. It offers shallow waters with smaller waves allowing everyone to enjoy the sea at a comfortable 23°. There are a variety of amenities as well as nearby shops, restaurants, and entertainment, making this area extremely popular with tourists.

Preferring something a little quieter, you could visit Canal d-Amour, not far from Sidari. Here you can experience the stunning views, snorkel, visit the famous love tunnel, and spend time relaxing amongst the natural beauty.

While in Sidari take advantage of the water park where you’ll enjoy cooling off as you splash around – with gentle breezes and clear skies, we’re sure you’ll need it!

Sun seekers will be in their element this month thanks to the 12 hours of sun at 25°c averages and reaching 31° highs.

We’re sure the beach will be at the top of your to-do list, especially now the sea is also warm at 25°. Visit Paleokastritsa Beach if you want everything close by – you get the usual facilities, along with sun loungers to hire, tavernas for when you need a break, water sports, and ample parking. This sand and shingle beach is perfect for a long day in the sun, and the turquoise and shallow water is extremely tempting when you need to cool down.

If you want to seek a little shade, you could visit Corfu Gallery which is host to a variety of art and sculptures. It is nestled amongst the tall buildings in one of Corfu’s oldest streets and would be a perfect retreat from the hot climate.

With July being one of the warmest months and extremely popular with families during the school holidays, it would be worth booking your holiday early.

Travel Vixta Corfu in July is hot and sunny with temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius during the day and in the low 20s in the evenings. You are usually guaranteed sunshine and little to no rain. Travel Vixta

With daytime temperatures at 28°c and highs of 31°, August is probably on par with July for being one of the hottest months of the year. This is peak holiday season and the island will be bustling. Again, with little chance of rain, clear blue skies, and long days, you’ll have chance to fit a lot in.

If all you want to do is relax on the beach, then head to what’s known as Hidden Cove in Barbati – a small stone beach that has a handful of beach chairs and is an ideal spot for snorkelling. It is recommended you get there early and by the time the sun gets to its hottest you can head further down the sand to seek some shade.

If you don’t mind the crowds or you’re a young couple seeking adventure and activity, you might want to visit Kavos Beach, located on the south coast it is part of the 18-30’s resort in Kavos Town. With an array of fun water sports and beachfront bars, as well as toilets, showers and parking, you’ll have everything in one place for a great day out. You could also party into the night by staying in Kavos and enjoying all that the nightlife brings – bars, nightclubs, and entertainment.

Prices will have increased a lot for this month and accommodation by the beach will be booked up quickly. If you like to plan everything for your holiday, do it early. Alternatively, you can see what last minute deals are available if you’re more flexible.

My Tunbridge Wells Beautiful! Clear blue skies and sunshine for the duration of the month. It could possibly be too hot for some people but we love it there in August. The evenings are warm too, so you won't even need a cardigan or jumper. My Tunbridge Wells

From September the summer will slowly start to fade as the temperatures decrease slightly, although you will still get long days of sunshine and the skies will be clear. As the month progresses it will get quieter because families return to work and school, and those looking for a tranquil retreat without the scorching heat holiday now.

Winds can be moderate and you may experience some rain – you’ll still need light clothing, but it may be worth bringing a jacket in case you do get caught in a shower.

Hiking and walking are great at this time of year, when you can follow trails through mountains and olive groves, taking in nature and picturesque views. Pantokrator Mountain is a good choice – if you’re an avid hiker and looking for a challenge this is an ideal trek. For a shorter and slower paced walk, visit Old Perithia – Corfu’s oldest village with beautiful buildings, narrow streets, and peaceful surroundings.

Catching the last of the summer sun will be easy if you head to one of the many beaches. On the west coast you’ll find Pelekas Beach which has a large stretch of sand with calm waters.

The sea is still a good temperature at 24° so you’ll be able to paddle and enjoy water sports for as long as you like.

Sea temperature

The climate is still pleasant this month and although temperatures continue to fall, you’ll still see highs of 23°c. However, lows of 14° are now possible.

You may experience rain as moderate showers – 11 days out of the whole month is not bad compared to the autumn weather back in the UK. You’ll feel a gentle breeze and clouds will form towards the end of the month.

Although October isn’t classed as the high season, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to go to the beach. Thanks to the climate you will still get ample opportunity to hit the beach. If you’re looking for a quiet spot you could visit Myrtiotissa Beach on the west coast. It can be a bit tricky to get to and some people may be put off by this and go to a beach that is more accessible, but once you’re there you’ll find golden sand, clear waters, stunning cliffs, and greenery. The sea will be warm enough to swim in too and with nearby restaurants you could spend most of your day here.

If you want to explore as much of Corfu as possible, you could take the Grand Island Tour where you will visit some of the most famous landmarks, history, culture, and natural beauty. It will be a full day of discovery and learning all about this beautiful Greek island.

The climate changes quite dramatically over the next couple of months, with average temperatures of 14-15°c and only 4 hours of sun per day. The number of days of rain jumps to 15 now, so you’ll probably need a few layers, even more so when the nights drop cool.

The sea temperature is around 19° so you could still go for a swim, depending on your preference and if you do want to visit the beach, head west to Ermones Beach. With hills and greenery encasing the sands it shouldn’t get too windy – you probably won’t be able to spend too long here but it’s a must visit when you holiday in Corfu.

Crowds have long gone and you are able to discover Corfu from a different perspective. Although you might get some rain during your trip, it should not detract from the fact that this Greek island is a truly magical place. Explore the cultures, narrow streets, and charm of the towns, as well as walking around museums, and with only a handful of tourists around, you’ll get to feel like one of the locals!

Restaurants will still be open so you can experience some authentic Grecian cuisine. The nightlife scene remains popular, and you’ll be able to find bars and clubs open around the island.

Rhian Westbury The weather in Corfu in November can high a high of 19°C so it's still a nice comfortable temperature, but it has an average low of 10°C Rhian Westbury

Sea temperature

The sea has cooled down to 16°c which will most likely be too cold to enjoy comfortably – if you’re visiting in December, book accommodation with a heated pool.

There will only be 3 hours of sunshine per day now and the highest temperature reaches 15°, along with over half of the month seeing rain and some moderate breezes present, you’ll want to take this into consideration when planning your trip and packing your case.

It might be worth seeking accommodation with everything close by so your stay is as relaxed as possible. You won’t be able to sunbathe for hours on the beach, but taking a stroll will still be nice to enjoy the surroundings and maybe a sunset – try Kalamaki Beach for instance.

When holidaying in the winter it’s best to stick to the bigger towns for your accommodation, but don’t miss out on visiting the smaller villages too. Chlomos Village is stunning with its colourful Venetian style houses, cobbled streets, vibrant flowers, and traditional dishes.

The towns and villages in Corfu will be decorated for the holiday season and you’ll get to see some memorable sights. You can even pick up some unusual gifts for your loved ones back home.

You should get a good deal on your holiday package in December and the few sunny days you’ll experience will definitely boost your mood, especially when you compare Corfu’s climate to the cold you’re used to.

Because Corfu spans quite a length from north to south, you may wish to plan your trip to combine the location of your accommodation with nearby activities you enjoy, local beaches, and places of interest to you and your family.

Whether you’re looking for a summer holiday or a winter getaway, you will be amazed at how different the island can look and feel. You may even have more than one holiday here to appreciate the difference.
