Our guide to the weather and climate in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and it boasts year-round good weather. Depending on what you want to get out of your holiday will determine the time of year you travel. You may want to spend your days topping up your tan on the beach, exploring every corner of the island, or experiencing some new activities – whatever it is, you’ll be able to do it all here.

What could be a better feeling than stepping off the plane to begin your holiday in Fuerteventura for some winter sun? And by winter, we don’t mean the sun glistening on the morning frost! We mean high temperatures of 21°c, averages of 18° and the sea being as warm as 19°.

With 3 days of rain over the whole month, you can enjoy a trip to the beach. Just be aware that rain is still possible throughout your stay and there will probably be a few more clouds present.

A great way to explore the island in January is by foot because the weather is pleasant enough to enjoy long walks outside. You will get to view some of the scenery that Fuerteventura has to offer, or you could even hire a bike without getting too hot.

If you’d rather just enjoy a day soaking up the sun (which you can still do in January), then try Caleta de Fuste Beach with its calm waters – popular with families who have small children.

Because there is less wind in January, it could be an ideal time to take a boat tour – in particular a dolphin boat tour. You can choose from a few that are dotted around the island and if you’re someone who likes to plan ahead, then you can easily book online and add it to your holiday itinerary.

If you enjoy the quieter months then you’ll probably find a really good deal when travelling to Fuerteventura in February. You’d have to be really unlucky to experience the rain as it will only happen over the course of 2 days – this is nothing compared to some of the weather back in the UK. Average temperatures of 18°c mean you can enjoy the days comfortably, though you may need to cover up later on in the evening.

Again, February is known for being a windy month. This is great if you enjoy water sports and some people visit the island for that very reason, with moderate breezes being perfect for windsurfing. Flag Beach on the north coast is ideal for beginners thanks to its shallow waters, and for those more experienced, Costa Calma is perfect with its bigger waves, thanks to the stronger winds. The sea temperature is around 18° which is considered comfortable.

For a quieter beach day, you could opt for Baja Gomez Beach – situated in the south, it is a sandy beach with fewer tourists, making it quiet and a little more intimate.

Thanks to the year-round climate being so steady there will always be bars, restaurants, and nightclubs open. If you like the nightlife scene but aren’t too keen on it being overcrowded, February might be ideal, as well as not having to deal with the heat and humidity.

Midlands Traveller It's quite mild for British standards. Sunny during the day and the temperature drops a bit in the evenings. But it is still in double figures. Midlands Traveller

From March onwards, you’ll see all the temperatures rise. 8 hours of sunshine per day at 18°c (22° at its highest) means you can begin to work on your tan. Depending on how warm you prefer the water to be, you could probably take a short dip in the sea.

Undoubtedly there are some beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura, and we’d highly recommend El Castillo Beach situated half way down the island on the east coast – ideal for families with children, the beach is sandy, and the water is calm.

If you’re holidaying as a couple, we’d suggest somewhere a little more private such as Barlovento Beach which doesn’t see many tourists. Here you’ll feel stronger winds, but you’ll also be able to witness some wonderful scenery and really get to relax and unwind.

Moving into spring, the weather can be a little temperamental but don’t let this put you off booking a getaway in March – before the official high season you should be able to get a great deal.

If you want to venture away from the usual beach holiday, there are plenty of places to explore. After the winter months, a beautiful place to visit is El Pinar de Betancuria – a dedicated picnic area that is probably the greenest during March, surrounded by Canarian pine trees and perfect to enjoy a spot of lunch. Incorporate this into your day of sightseeing in Betancuria – steeped in history, home to some stunning buildings and architecture, as well as its charming atmosphere and paved streets, this is definitely a place not to be missed.

If you’re not into too much walking, then why not book a jeep safari tour which will let you sit back while someone else does the driving – going off road and discovering some breathtaking scenery and untouched natural beauty.

Temperatures hit the early 20’s in April, making it a great time for some families to take their first holiday of the year during Easter break. You’ll find this time will get busier on the island and most likely more expensive, so if you aren’t tied down to school holidays, choose another week to travel if you’d prefer it a little quieter.

You’ll only see rain for 1 day over the whole month and with night time temperatures dropping to around 16°c, you won’t need to pack anything too thick. The sun will be hot enough to burn at highs of 23° so remember to pack your suncream too! It will shine for 8-9 hours per day and if you want guaranteed rays then opt to holiday in the south, as the north is usually cloudier.

If you’re not a fan of the sea until it reaches the 20’s, we’d recommend finding accommodation with a heated pool – this won’t be difficult because all hotels and complexes are open for business all year round.

A lovely place to visit this time of year is Oasis Park, located in the southern region – with the weather warming up but still not being too hot, you’ll be able to enjoy the zoo, cactus garden, restaurants and shows. The climate will be pleasant in April to walk around comfortably.

Sticking with the south, you would not want to miss the chance of visiting Pico de la Zarza which is Fuerteventura’s largest mountain. Following the trail up to the highest point will allow you to witness the most incredible views, landscape that changes texture and colour as you move along, as well as wildlife and nature. This is a hiker’s dream and one of the island’s most beautiful gems.

Of course, you may prefer to do nothing other than apply your suncream and head to the beach with your favourite book, so why not try Majanicho Beach in the north. It is a place of peace and tranquillity, with not too many tourists. The waves are gentle and everything about this place just exudes calm. At 19° you could probably take a dip in the sea, depending on your preference.

Travel Vixta During our stay the weather was 19-21 degrees Celsius each day. We had sunshine for the entire week of our stay. It was warm enough for sunbathing in the middle of the day, but slightly cooler in the mornings and evenings. It was the perfect temperature for exploring the island and taking day trips without being uncomfortably hot. Travel Vixta

Temperatures sit in the 20’s during May, rising a little towards the end of the month, making it a great time to take your holiday before the main summer season starts.

Boasting 9 hours of sun throughout the day, it’s perfect for working on your tan – a lovely place to do this is El Cotillo – in the northeast, this is a little village that offers some beautiful sands. In particular the Lagoon Beaches or La Concha Beach. Here you’ll be able to relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy the gentle waves. Beyond the beach you will find the village holds a lot of charm. There are two harbours, along with supermarkets, restaurants, and if you enjoy something a little more active you can try cycling or water sports. Apart from that, the village is a calm, chilled out place to visit. If you’re looking for a holiday with exciting nightlife then this won’t be the place for you, but if you prefer to enjoy a cocktail while watching a blissful sunset then you’ll hit the jackpot.

To find some of the best nightlife you’d do well to head to Corralejo or Puerto del Rosario where you’ll experience a mix of bars and clubs, an eclectic mix of people, and vibrant atmosphere.

There isn’t too much wind around in May, and it won’t pick up too much until the summer months. Thankfully you won’t need to worry about sandstorms too much either, and you really will be holidaying at one of the most pleasant times of the year.

We see the summer season begin from now and the temperatures will only continue to rise. Staying in the mid 20’s throughout the month, we can understand why things start to get a little busier. While it’s not quite peak season yet, you should still be able to get a decent-priced holiday.

The fact that you’ll see zero days of rain and experience 10 hours of sun per day, it really will make it feel like summer has arrived. Night time temperatures will only drop a couple of degrees and remain in the 20’s. The wind may make it feel a little cooler.

The sea will definitely be enjoyable now thanks to its 21° heat – an ideal time to take advantage of El Casaron Beach which is ideal with its near perfectly calm waters. You can enjoy the large beach with soft, golden sand, along with the onsite facilities. Alternatively, choose the stunning Sotavento beach. It is one of the longest on the island and is host to a lot of water sports and competitions.

The wind does begin to pick up in June and will be present throughout July too. Bear in mind that you may experience calimas (dust storms) which will make the temperature rise further, but they’re not a huge cause for concern and shouldn’t deter your trip in June.

The winds may pick up later in the evening too so it might be worth packing a light jumper or cardigan just in case. During the day though, you’ll probably be glad of a little breeze to cool you down.

Thanks to the long days of sunshine, this month is an ideal time to explore on foot. Take note to start your day early though because as midday approaches, the sun will continue to get hotter.

Another place you do not want to miss out on is Lobos Island, in the north. It boasts volcanic wilderness, along with wild and authentic beauty. To preserve the natural spaces of the island you now must book to visit, so it’s worth doing your research to avoid disappointment. While there you’ll be able to experience the coves and beaches, as well as walking trails and seeing La Caldera volcano, not forgetting the stunning views too. It will be quite warm because there isn’t much shade, making June an ideal time to visit – with the heat not being too overwhelming to enjoy all that’s on offer and a quieter month will ensure you can book your trip easily.

July is one of the hotter months and one of the busiest too. During the day you can enjoy temperatures in the mid to late 20’s and through the night, at 22° you can take in the sunset without needing to wrap up. During the day you’ll need high factor suncream to protect your skin, especially if you plan on relaxing on one of the many beaches. A good choice would be Matorral Beach – being in the south, the climate will be perfect for sunbathing.

At 12km in length this beach has plenty of variety – from nudist areas to those parts best for water sports, to places that are quieter. There’s something for everyone here and with 10 hours of sunshine and zero days of rain, you’ll be able to spend the whole day soaking up the atmosphere. Taking a swim in the sea will be lovely at this time of year too.

Hotels will be busy with families due to the school holidays, and the prices will have increased. If this is the only time you can travel, then make sure you book early. If you enjoy the climate this time of year brings but want a quieter holiday, we’d suggest Caleta de Fuste or Playa Jandia Morro.

When looking for a bit of adventure, you’ll have opportunities to try a buggy tour across the sand dunes – an off-road experience that allows you to explore the dunes and volcanic area.

Taking advantage of the breeze and water temperature, this would be a great month for learning a new skill – kitesurfing or scuba diving for example, or if you’re a bit of a pro at these sports, you’ll fit right in at any of the numerous beaches.

At the height of summer and temperatures being some of the hottest of the year, makes August a truly perfect holiday month. Sun worshippers, solo travellers, families, and couples make up just part of the tourist industry during this popular season.

You’ll see 9 hours of sun which will reach 27-28°c, no days of rain, and a sea temperature of 22°. The nights are idyllic – with temperatures only dropping to the mid 20’s it will be a lovely time to sit on your balcony, walk along the promenade, or enjoy an evening meal outdoors.

Now you’ll notice if you travel in August that it will be a bit breezy (this month is one of the windiest). Calimas may be more likely to happen because of the wind, but don’t let this put you off because they are rare and in the summer you’ll most definitely need a little breeze to cool you down!

Exploring the island is a great way to spend your holiday, especially if you like the heat. Take note though, there are not too many parts that offer natural shade so if you’re planning a walk or hike, we’d suggest doing this in the morning before the heat reaches its peak.

Now we mentioned Pico de la Zarza earlier, but it is worth visiting in the summer too because the clear skies during August will guarantee the best mountain views from the highest point of the island. If the climb to the top seems a little too much for you, then you could take a trip to the Salt Museum instead. Not only will you learn a few things, but the surroundings of the museum will give you some lovely beach views, as well as the chance to spot some birdlife and even chipmunks!

A holiday in August would not be complete without spending at least a couple of days at the beach. If you don’t mind the hot weather, then head to Costa Calma – a large and popular beach that is close to restaurants and shops and offer most amenities. Another option is Playa Chica Beach which is in the capital of Fuerteventura. It is mainly used by the locals, so you won’t find it bursting with tourists. Come here if you want to combine relaxation with a little sightseeing.

Another hot month, but things do quieten a little, especially towards the end when families head back home.

Daily temperatures of 25°c, highs of 28° and lows of 21° make September another fabulous time to travel. It is only expected to rain for 1 day of the month, so if you want to enjoy the last highs of summer, book your trip at this time.

We know some of you may want to experience the good climate but without the crowds – if this is how you like the beach too then we’ve got just the place – El Salmo. Set in beautiful surroundings this beach offers soft sand and clean water. Amenities are scarce but if you take a picnic and a good book, that really could be all you need.

If you like a bit of history when travelling to a new destination, visit La Entallada Lighthouse. A beautiful, yet unusual structure that is situated on top of a cliff. Not only will you get to explore all it has inside, but the views from the outside will be absolutely breathtaking.

With a steady climate and no unpredictable weather, September in Fuerteventura is so tempting, especially if this will be your last holiday of the year.

Carrie Ann Lightley The weather in Fuerteventura in September is warm and sunny. Perfect for lazing by the pool or hitting the beach to soak up those rays with a cocktail or two. Carrie Ann Lightley

The climate is still pleasant and while the UK will be well into Autumn with the accompanying rain and wind, Fuerteventura temperatures will be in the early 20’s and rain may be present for only 2 days of the month - which is often during the night.

Winds are present but only as a gentle breeze, so nothing that will stop you from enjoying the island. You’ll get 7 hours of sun per day and the sea remains warm at 22°c, so having a beach day in October is still possible

Think about visiting Esquinzo Beach, a secluded area that may be ideal for couples or those seeking a peaceful retreat. Black volcanic rocks, soft golden sands, clear blue water, as well as cliffs and sandy mountains make this a truly majestic sight.

If sightseeing and history are more your thing, why not leave the sun seekers on the beach and hop over to La Olvia where you’ll be able to visit museums, churches, and historical buildings steeped in architecture and culture.

The weather will not be too hot, and you’ll find walking round the beautiful island comfortable to do in the October Climate.

Bearing in mind that you are probably used to cold, rain, wind and even the odd snowflake in the UK, November on the island is a complete contrast to this. You may get 3 days of rain over the month, and the increased risk of sandstorms (calimas) thanks to the wind, but you’ll also get 7 hours of glorious sunshine with temperatures as high as 24°c – imagine starting your winter off on the island that boasts beautiful weather!

You’ll find this time of year relatively quiet, with tourists mostly being couples or those with really young children. Don’t worry though, thanks to the year-round good weather, accommodation and things to do are easily sought and always available.

If you’re visiting in November we’ll presume you enjoy the quieter holiday where you can go at your own pace, don’t have to queue and places aren’t too overcrowded, then we imagine you’ll benefit from spending some time at the secluded beaches. Gran Tarajal offers tranquillity, but no facilities, much like La Lajita, with its clean sand and calm sea.

Those of you who like it a bit livelier could also spend the day at Acua Water park. You’ll find a children’s club, attractions, basketball, and of course a variety of water slides. There’s something for everyone here and November won’t be too busy, so you’ll be able to enjoy a day out without the huge crowds.

You’re bound to get a great deal on flights and accommodation so don’t miss the chance of some winter sun.

We see the temperatures change in December and the average sits at 19°c throughout the day. Highs of 22° still occur, but you’ll also experience lows of 16°. If you’re thinking of travelling in December, make sure to pack some warmer clothing in case you get a little chilly during the night.

With 3 days of rain predicted over the whole month and 6 hours of sun per day, we’re pretty sure it will be a pleasant contrast to the winter climate you’re normally used to. It may be a little overcast at times, along with some light winds, but we’d say it’s worth it to have a winter getaway in such a beautiful place. If you want to make the most of the climate, head south because it is less cloudy than the north.

You’ll still be able to enjoy the beach too, particularly La Pared Beach. On the west coast, you’ll probably find the sea too rough to swim in, but sunbathing and relaxing are still great ways to spend your time.

If you like to explore then you could visit the fishing museum or art centre, especially on a cloudy or rainy day. There are so many interesting places to that you’ll be spoilt for choice!

The island in December is considered another high season because of tourists coming here to enjoy some winter sun, although you won’t see crowds like those in the main peak season. Christmas decorations and lights will be all around the island and it really can be a sight to remember.

See our full analysis of the Fuerteventura weather during December

If you’re looking to holiday in just one part of the island, we’d suggest 1 week to 10 days being enough, but if you really want to explore the whole of Fuerteventura, make sure to book your stay for 2 weeks so you can take advantage of such a stunning part of the world, and no matter what time of year you visit, you can be sure that the sun will be shining.
