Crete weather

Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits – and for good reason – the weather. There are so many things to discover and experience such as the beautiful beaches, clear blue waters, culture, and natural beauty. Although what good is it all if you do not have glorious weather to compliment these beautiful surroundings?

Luckily the climate in Crete tends not to drop below 19°c in the summer months and 10°c in the winter months. And similarly, there is less rainfall during the Summer than the winter. Of course, there are other factors that will affect the weather. These include:

• Landscape – there are some mountainous regions in Crete which can make those parts particularly exposed to strong winds. You may find that even during the hotter months, if you are adventuring near the mountains, it may well be quite blustery. You will also find it feels warmer by the coast as the winds push the warm air that way
• Sea – with temperatures of the sea reaching in excess of 26°c at the height of summer, it will feel rather warm all round the coast
• Region – South Crete is a little warmer than the North, and the rain is least likely to make an appearance in the East, so depending on how warm you like your holidays to be will determine what part of the island you visit

Weather during January

Considered one of the winter months, the temperature will be at its lowest – around 10°c to 14°c during the day (although reaching 16°c is not unheard of), with possibilities of dropping to a cold 5°c during the night. You will find that rain is more likely too, with it being one of the wettest periods, you could expect to see up to 14 days of rain in one month. There isn’t much chance of snow when you are closer to the beaches and town areas, though you’d expect a dusting or more wintry weather throughout the mountainous regions.

Although the temperature may drop, the sea temperature will remain around 16°c so if you enjoy a refreshing swim to wake you up in a morning, you’ll be in the right place. 

Most of the beaches would be closed during January which is to be expected – but if you are the kind of traveller who likes nothing more than discovering what history lies within a place then January is a wonderful month for this. If you prefer to have a relaxing holiday and want to indulge in some time for yourself, then a spa would also be easy to find and most likely be a tranquil getaway.

Weather during February

Again, another winter month, that is usually quiet – perfect if you like a slow paced trip. 

Temperatures will average 12°c to 15°c, giving you three hours of sun throughout the day. In one month, you could get up to 11 days of rain and times when it becomes quite breezy which will make the air feel a lot colder. February is considered one of the windiest months.

Some beaches will start to open up but remain quiet. This would make an ideal time for those who enjoy walking, giving you the opportunity to take long strolls on the beach (just remember to wrap up first).

Weather during March

Diving into Spring, you’ll find the temperatures starting to creep up to around 14°c to 16°c. The sun will shine for longer (five hours) and the number of days it could rain lowers to eight.

March gives us the most unpredictable weather, although the temperatures are a little better, it is worth noting that visitors should be prepared for differing conditions, from highs of 17°c, downpours, to strong winds that can even carry snow from the mountains - though this is rare!

It is worth taking trips to the beach before they begin to get busy, as well as day trips that will be more comfortable to enjoy while the heat is not too much.

Weather during April

Known for the start of the tourist season, things start to get a little busier from April. With temperatures climbing again to 17°c and giving highs of 20°c it is understandable that more people begin to visit Crete. More hours of sunshine and less days of rain means you can enjoy exploring throughout the day. 

Along with more beaches opening up, there are also cafés and restaurants that take advantage of visitors from all walks of life. Outdoor activities are available such as surfing and snorkelling and these become very popular now the sea warms up a little more at 17°c.

Weather during May

The average daily temperature now reaches the mid 20’s and with eight hours of sun, it really does start to feel a lot more like summer. This does also mean that droughts are more likely, especially because there are only 3 days of rain predicted for the whole month and winds are particularly dry and warm. 

For those who dare, naturist beaches gain in popularity through May due to the rising temperatures. Family beaches also become busier, and a host of amenities open up to give visitors everything they need for a day out – snacks, drinks, meals, the hire of loungers and water sports equipment.

Nightlife also begins to warm up. Clubs open and more bars and restaurants open their doors after the winter season.

April and May would also be referred to as the shoulder season in Crete, being in between the very low season and peak season, although it has started to get busier during these months you still won’t see the height of summer until the end of June and moving into July.

Weather during June

Double figures of sunshine per day is most certainly what you have been dreaming about. At 26°c on average, highs of 28°c and lows of 18°c, June is a wonderful month to visit. Bear in mind that it is only a month before school holidays begin, so if you are the kind of person that prefers a calmer, more relaxing holiday, then June is one of the best months to visit. Even more so, if you are a fan of the sea and all things water related, you can take advantage of scuba diving, snorkelling, boat trips, and fishing thanks to warmer sea temperatures of 19°c.

With so many beaches dotted around the island and fully accessible it really wouldn’t be difficult to find one that suits you. If you are closer to the town, you could always take a boat to a neighbouring beach.

Rain is practically unheard of during June and the air feels a lot warmer thanks to the warm winds.

Weather during July

As we reach the peak season, July is the hottest month – 28°c temperatures and thirteen hours of sunshine makes July an ideal month for avid sunbathers.

There are times when it can seem quite a windy month, with southern winds being a lot warmer than the north west. This does mean there is the potential risk of dust storms, though not lasting too long, this shouldn’t affect your holiday but bear it in mind if you have any allergies or breathing issues. 

Beaches do get extremely busy during peak season but as mentioned earlier, with so many you shouldn’t have any problems finding a spot on one of them. Surfing, windsurfing and plenty of other water sports are on offer, so if you’re looking for an activity filled holiday or you’re keen to try something new then you’re in luck.

Weather during August

Another month that is a sunbather’s delight is August. Thanks to its minimal cloud, 12 hours of sun and highs of 29°c you can be sure to keep your tan topped up for the duration of your holiday.

Again, water sports are at their peak, as well as spending the day at the beach. Restaurants of all varieties are easily found, making it perfect to take in all the scenery and blue skies while dining outside. 

If you can manage to spend a day in the heat then you will love this sunshine holiday, although some people may find these temperatures a little too much and would prefer to take on indoor activities, such as a visit to the aquarium, or cooling off at the local waterpark.

Weather during September

As Crete begins to move into Autumn, it remains relatively busy and with temperatures still in the mid 20’s along with the sea temperature, you can expect to enjoy the beaches and take a dip in the warm waters for the rest of this month. 

Because the winds are less noticeable it may mean the climate starts to cool a little and with the presence of more clouds there is a stronger possibility of the sun being blocked and rain showers occurring.

This doesn’t have to stop your enjoyment though as there are still plenty of things to experience. Exploring the history and archaeology of Crete is a brilliant way to spend your days, as well as the many festivals celebrated during September.

Weather during October

With October seeing the hours of daily sun dramatically reduce and the end of the month becoming cooler, things start to quieten down.

It is an ideal time for those who love to pack their days out with trips, adventures, and experiences while avoiding the hustle and bustle, the endless queues, and chaos that peak season can bring. It is worth bearing in mind though, that while the season hasn’t officially closed for tourism, there may be limited amenities available due to some businesses closing early.

With 6 hours of sunshine per day and the temperature lowering to around 20°c on average and a peak of 24°c, it is a great time to explore because it is not too hot. October would be the ideal time to go hiking in the mountains, similarly beaches are still open and offer a good day out without the overwhelming heat.

Rain can be expected at times, more so in the West, along with thunderstorms. If you’re still keen on travelling in October, you’d find it better to look at taking your holiday in Southeast Crete for the driest weather.

Weather during November

Moving towards winter, November can be cloudy but still not too cold. Peak temperatures of 21°c are warm enough to comfortably enjoy a holiday in Crete. Sea temperatures sit at around 20°c so swimming can still factor into your trip.

The nights see temperatures drop to 13°c and the end of the month becomes noticeably cooler. You feel this more if you are situated close to the mountains, although the winds will blow the cold air towards the coast too.

If you’re looking for things to do in November, you can benefit from activities such as golf and horse riding – you’ll find them a lot more comfortable to do with the cooler climate. You can also experience some of the festivities that take place during the month, where you will fit in more as a local, rather than a tourist.

If you’re looking for a more tranquil holiday, Crete will be quiet enough for you to enjoy a stroll to many of the restaurants for a relaxing beverage and fine dining.

Weather during December

Winter is here, but the climate is still quite mild. At its peak you can expect to feel 17°c temperatures, with the evening becoming a lot cooler at 10°c.

You’ll now only experience around 3 hours of sunshine due to the cloudy days, which can give 9 days of rain over the month. It may not seem like much, but you have to take into consideration the winds from the mountains which pose the risk of storms.

If you are thinking of travelling over the Christmas period, Crete would be an idyllic setting. Tourists are welcomed and can enjoy the festivities around the streets.

Safaris, archaeology, and exploring can all be on your agenda in December – just remember to pack a few jumpers instead of your bikinis and trunks!

Whichever month you choose to visit Crete, you will not be short of things to do, activities to try out and new experiences to cherish. If you prefer a quiet getaway then plan a holiday during the low season of November to March, otherwise peak season of June to September will provide the hustle and bustle of a popular tourist holiday.
