Our guide to the weather in Amsterdam during August
We've looked at the most up-to-date weather data for Amsterdam, covering the last 12 years up to 2026, plus we've asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about Amsterdam weather in August.
What's the weather like in Amsterdam in August?
We visited Amsterdam in August and I was surprised that the weather was very similar to the UK. As this was our second visit to the city (we had last visited in May and the weather was glorious), I expected beautiful sunny days to explore Amsterdam. The weather was very mixed in August, yes we had some sunshine, but we also had a day when the temperature dropped and we had rain during the evening. Despite the cold and rain we still managed to get out and explore the city, and when the sun did shine and the temperature went up to around 18 degrees, it gave us the chance to soak up the sunshine in Amsterdam.

What should I pack for a holiday in Amsterdam in August?
As we experienced mixed weather during our trip in August, I would try and pack for all weathers. I was grateful that I had packed a warm coat, as this was definitely needed one evening. Other than that I packed layers, comfortable shoes for all the walking, and I popped a small umbrella in my hand luggage which was very much needed one evening. We did pack suntan lotion , but unfortunately it stayed in the suitcase for this trip.

What's great about Amsterdam in August?
I fully expected Amsterdam to be wall to wall sunshine in August, but the weather was very changeable. It didn't stop us from doing any of the activities we had planned, and I think when it rains on holiday you just have to go with it. As long as you have waterproof shoes and a coat to protect you from the rain, you can carry on exploring this great city. It was actually great fun to be on a canal cruise, listening to the rain coming down on the roof of the boat. We had a great time in Amsterdam, and I am sure we will be back to explore more of this fun city.
