England's traffic light system explained

England's traffic light system was introduced to provide a framework under which overseas travel could restart. It aimed to eliminate the chaos caused by short-notice travel bans seen in 2020, but it hasn't made a great start...

How does the traffic light system work?

The green, amber and red lists tell you what the requirements are when you return to England. There are separate rules for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The requirements you might face on arriving at your holiday destination are different, so you'll need to check what that country requires. For example, Portugal currently requires you to take a simple lateral-flow test on arrival. Italy currently requires you to self-isolate for 5 days. The Foreign Office website has an updated list of entry requirements for all countries

The green, amber and red lists requirements are as follows:

Green: Travellers must take a test before returning home. On arriving back home in England, they must take a PCR test on or before day two of arrival which must be pre-booked before your holiday. Holidaymakers who test negative will not need to quarantine on their return or take any additional tests.

Amber: Travellers must take a test before returning home. On arrival in England, they must take a PCR test on day two and day eight, which must be pre-booked before your holiday. You must quarantine for ten days on arrival home. There is an option for “test to release” on day five to end self-isolation early, but will add the cost of another test to your package.

Red: Travellers must take a test before returning home. On arrival in England, they must stay in a managed quarantine hotel for ten days which should be booked before their trip. The stay will involve PCR testing on day two and day eight.

Tour operators and airlines will help you navigate entry and testing requirements. Testing packages are being offered at a discounted rate by all travel companies, so the process isn't as daunting as it might sound. There is also a very real hope that fully vaccinated status will remove many of the quarantine and testing requirements in the near future.

What countries are currently on the green list?

  • Anguilla
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia (Closed to UK tourists)

UK travel announcement due on Thursday

23rd June 2021 by Paul

The UK Government is due to announce the latest changes to the red, amber and green travel lists this Thursday. Speculation is rife, but past experience shows us that anything could happen. There has been very little consistency in the approach to foreign travel so far.The Delta variant has significantly complicated matters. It's now far more likely you'll catch Coronavirus in the UK than in most European holiday destinations. This has led Italy and Germany to impose quarantine measures on...

My Covid-19 experience

20th March 2020 by Paul

It's been a tough week for everyone. Here at Travelscoop, we've been dealing with the total collapse of the travel industry as well as two of our team members fighting a Covid-19 infection. Stuart has had mild symptoms, but I was hit harder.I thought it might be useful to let you know how my symptoms played out, in order to give you a heads-up on what a relatively fit person with no medical conditions might expect. I should say upfront that I haven't been tested since the current (infuriating)...

Watch the video of Stuart drawing the winner in the Facebook video above. Due to the current coronavirus situation, we were a little delayed in picking the winner, so thank you for bearing with us. A big congratulations to Lynda Wilde! Fingers crossed that Lynda will be able...

Travelling in the age of coronavirus - A weekend in Leipzig

15th June 2020 by Budget Traveller

The journey begins again. This was our first trip anywhere since the 10th March when we went to Amsterdam for my birthday/work trip. After the stress and strain of the last few months, packing the bag feels like a release. I dust off the packing cube. It has been sulking in the bitter depths of my backpack since early March. I’m little unsure of what to pack. I mentally go through my checklist. Sometimes, its these small rituals of travel that you miss the most about travel. We pack our...

What to do on the island of Lanzarote

25th January 2021 by TravelDave

Some time ago, I fancied an island escape and headed over to Lanzarote, which forms part of the collection of islands called the Canary Islands in Spain. After months of lockdown due to coronavirus, the UK started to open up to travel for a select few countries in the summer. As Spain was one of those countries, this made for a perfect opportunity to escape and visit Lanzarote for a week....
