Our guide to the weather and climate in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the Canary Islands and the third most popular to visit. The climate, as you will read about in more detail below, is good all year round and this means you can take your trip at a time that best suits you, safe in the knowledge that you will get some lovely weather.

We all know that the UK weather in January is miserable. As you head into the new year you'll probably be yearning for some warm weather. If so, Lanzarote sun will be just the tonic!

Temperatures are the lowest of the year in January, but with the sun shining for around 7 hours of the day and only 3 days rain over the whole month, we’re confident it will be better than what you’re used to in the UK, and that’s precisely why you’d visit Lanzarote during this time.

On average, you can expect 17°c, with highs of 21°. This is decent for the start of the year, and it gives you the opportunity to do a variety of activities and sightseeing around the island. It is quite a windy island, but nothing that is going to bother you too much, even in the cooler months.

January will feel much more intimate because of a quieter and slower pace than peak season brings. It is the ideal time to visit if you want to do other things and not just sit on the beach every day (although there is nothing at all wrong with that!) For example, one of the most talked about and probably most visited attractions is Timanfaya National Park – you can book a tour by bus, but if you are active and enjoy the outdoors, you can choose to hike. We’d recommend the latter to experience the scenery up close, witness the volcanoes, and soak in the atmosphere.

Walkers may also be interested in walking and climbing Montana Roja (translating to Red Mountain). Here you can walk around the crater and see the stunning views from the top. Because there is no shade during the length of the walk, January is the ideal time for this kind of activity when the weather will not be too hot.

If you do prefer a beach holiday, there are many to choose from in Lanzarote such as Playa de Papagayo – the golden sands in January will be relatively peaceful and this is partly due to there being no local amenities, but if you are a couple hoping to enjoy a romantic stroll or relaxing break this is ideal for you.

The Travel Bunny The weather in Lanzarote in January can vary from year to year. I've been there in January and enjoyed warm sunny days but last year it was decidedly chilly and we had high winds on one day. Average temperatures at that time of year in Lanzarote are 17ºC -21ºC during the day dropping to 14º or lower at night. The Travel Bunny

Sea temperature

If you aren’t too worried about having scorching hot weather, but simply want to enjoy a sunnier climate to escape your usual winter, then February is a perfect time to travel. With 3 days of rain over the month there is still a risk of storms, windy and wet weather, but conditions will be a lot nicer in Lanzarote, and with 7 hours of sun per day we’d say it’s worth the risk!

Night-time temperatures will drop to around 14°c, so make sure to pack a couple of jumpers or long sleeve tops at least. If you want to avoid the windier parts of the island, then you’d be best to stay in Playa Blanca – located in south Lanzarote which tends to be warmer than the north. If you aren’t too worried about the breezier climate then head for Costa Teguise – particularly popular with those who love the water – and thanks to the waves, you’ll be able to take part in surfing or other water sports. Costa Teguise is also a popular place for families where you have the choice of 5 beaches, visiting water parks, play golf or browse the markets.

High temperatures of 21°c and the sea being comfortable enough for most to swim in, you’ll get some lovely days out in February. Sandstorms (Calima) may be an increased risk if winds pick up, but these are still a rare occurrence.

If it is a little too cloudy during your stay, you could fill your days with activities such as go karting or visiting Rancho Texas Park, and the Pirate Museum.

Travel Vixta The weather in Lanzarote in February is mostly sunny, like the rest of the year on the island! The southern part of the island, in particular, has minimal rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making it a great place to visit from the UK for some winter sunshine. Daytimes have temperatures reaching from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius on the warmest days in February, and dropping to around 13 degrees during nighttime. It's not dissimilar to a warm spring in the UK as cloud cover and wind can make you feel cold and reach for a light cardigan, but the calm and uninterrupted blue skies make for perfect sunbathing weather! Sea temperature

March sees the start of the temperatures beginning to creep up – but as the seasons change from winter to spring the weather can still be a little unpredictable. You might not mind this however if you get a good deal on your accommodation and flights.

The sun shines for 8 hours per day with highs reaching the early 20’s, and while some people may not be brave enough to swim when the sea’s temperature sits at 18°c, the beach will be lovely to relax on as you begin to work on your tan.

Although you may experience some rain while you holiday in March, this shouldn’t go beyond a drizzle or light rain, but with the amount of sun throughout the day we’re sure you’ll dry off if you do get caught in a shower.

In the north you can visit a variety of places and because the climate is ideal to walk around, you’ll be able to enjoy discovering all that Lanzarote has to offer without being too warm. For example, Haria is a beautiful village to visit, offering charming narrow streets and beautiful green landscapes – it is not overcrowded with tourists and is quite the hidden gem. While you’re there you could visit Cueva de los Verdes (translating to Green Cave) - being a popular tourist attraction, March is the ideal month to avoid crowds and learn about the volcanic history of the island.

March sees Lanzarote taking part in Carnival Month, so if you enjoy big events and want to witness the parades, costumes, music and atmosphere, you’ll be pleased to know that this is the perfect month to travel to the island for this.

Sea temperature

We reach the 20’s in terms of temperature from April – overall you can expect 20°c, with highs of 24°. Although it can drop down to 16° at night, so you may need something to cover up if it gets a little chilly.

Thanks to a low chance of rain and cloud, the sun shines for 9 hours per day. Wind speeds vary but shouldn’t break out into anything more than a mild, fresh breeze.

If you think the sea is still a tad cool at 19°, then you might want to opt for accommodation that offers a heated pool – you can find these in most of the large resorts.

You’re in luck if you enjoy water sports because April is the start of windsurfing season. Costa Teguise is home to Las Cucharas which offer brilliant conditions for this very sport. If you’ve never tried it before or even if you are a pro, you’ll be able to enjoy all things windsurfing thanks to the local club.

Preferring a more relaxed experience at the beach, you can visit Bastian beach (also in Costa Teguise) where you’ll get chance to sunbathe for as long as you like, as well as having access to nearby restaurants, shops, and attractions.

Paul I was unfortunate enough to experience quite unusual weather in Lanzarote during April. It was very windy, which took the edge off the temperatures. There was also a lot of rain. Many of the locals described it as freak weather that had lasted for three weeks. You probably won't be as unlucky, but do check the weather forecast before heading off on holiday in April, just to be sure. I had to buy a few jumpers while I was there! Paul

In May you'll enjoy 10 hours of sun per day, with zero days of rain. Summer is on its way!

If you haven’t taken a holiday so far this year, then May is the ideal time to change that. The days are dry and sunny, while the nights begin to stay mild. The sea remains at 19°c, a comfortable temperature to swim in depending on your preference. As the month progresses the temperatures continue to rise, and any cloud coverage decreases. The wind is still noticeable as fresh breezes sweep over.

If you’re not put off by the windy areas, then we’d recommend visiting Playa de Orzola, situated in the far north of Lanzarote. This is a lovely place to visit for a couple, or maybe even a solo traveller. You’ll be able to take in the natural beauty, experience the white sands and clear water, and taste some of the freshest fish in restaurants, with beautiful views. If you are looking for a tranquil and relaxing holiday this is the ideal destination in May.

May is one of the most ideal months for exploring the island – this is because the days are longer and the sun is warm enough to walk or even cycle around, without becoming too hot. In between winter and summer places won’t be too crowded and you’ll get chance to enjoy tours and explore at a more relaxed pace. You’ll be able to stay outside for longer which means places such as the shipwreck in Arrecife Telamon, El Muro Natural Pool, and Timanfaya National Park will be excellent at this time of year.

The peak summer season is just around the corner, but June is perfect because it's the calm before the tourist storm!

The sea temperature ramps up from now too and sits at a nice 21°c so you’ll see more people in the water June onwards.

You’ll feel light to fresh breezes with high temperatures hitting 26° when the sun is at its best. This make beach days a delight – one such beach being El Reducto, found in Arrecife (in east Lanzarote and the capital city). The beach has all the facilities such as loungers, changing areas, and sun shades. It may be worth remembering if you do want a beach holiday, the second half of the month will warm up further. If you want to venture from the beach though, you’ll find the promenade with shops and restaurants, as well as museums, architecture, parks, and markets.

There are so many beautiful sites and attractions to discover and visit throughout your stay in Lanzarote, and thanks to the long days of sunshine with rain being rare, you’ll get chance to fit so much into your holiday that you’ll come away with some wonderful memories.

Sea temperature

Tourists from all walks of life will arrive in Lanzarote from now until the end of peak season in late September, especially families with children taking their school holidays. You’ll notice accommodation and travel prices rise from now too.

The high temperatures can reach 28°c, so you can expect the beaches to be thriving with people wanting to be close to the sea to cool off – the sea’s temperature will be an inviting 21° so it will get quite busy and water sports will also be extremely popular.

The winds will blow through and can be quite breezy at times, but this will be welcomed by those spending their time outdoors. Although there is little to no chance of rain, you may experience some cloud – this won’t hinder your chances of getting a suntan though so don’t worry!

Accommodation close to the beach and amenities are highly sought after during peak season, so we’d recommend Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise to get the most out of the facilities.

If you love a beach holiday, then it would be worth staying in Playa Blanca – situated in southern Lanzarote, you’ll find this is the hottest part on the island and with the sun shining 10 hours per day your tan will be the envy of friends back home.

If you’d like to get out of the sun for a while, try visiting Lanzarote Aquarium where you can enjoy the variety of sea life while cooling down in the shade.

The hottest month of the year and August is flooded with tourists. Daily highs can see temperatures in the late 20’s, sometimes reaching 30° heat. The night times are warm at 23° and this makes walks after dark to see the island’s charm a pleasant thing to do. The days are dry with high UV levels, no rain, and your case will be filled with swimwear, light clothing, and suncream.

The beaches will be busy, so it would be a good idea to head there early if you need to drive. You’ll be spoilt for choice with beaches because there are so many, with something for every type of tourist, such as Los Conchas beach which is quite secluded and peaceful, Charco del Palo offers a nudist beach, and Playa Grande is perfect for families because you can access all facilities while experiencing golden sands and calm waters.

Beyond the beaches and sunbathing, you’ll find some stunning scenery, beautiful sites, and entertaining attractions. You won’t be disappointed if you visit Jameos del Agua which consists of 3 main sites – Chico, Grande, and Cazuela, along with a concert hall and Casa de los Volcanoes, you will have a wonderful day filled with discoveries, history, tranquillity, and artistic surroundings. Opening times and prices vary, so be sure to check before you visit. Because the temperatures at night are just as good, the unique experience of Jameos del Agua will be equally as stunning after dark.

Another option to discovering Lanzarote in August is hiring a car to explore as much of the island as you can. You’ll be able to drive to multiple beaches, witness the volcanic landscape and panoramic views, as well as stopping off at a few bars and restaurants along the way.

Sea temperature

After the school holidays are over, late September quietens down, but only a little. Travellers are still enjoying the sun and although it’s not as hot as August, it is still up there as one of the warmest months to visit.

The sea however will probably be a tad warmer this month after heating up throughout the summer, and for this reason you’ll find lots of surfers and swimmers in the water.

You won’t see any rainy days yet and with the sun shining for 8 hours per day, it’s no wonder the amenities and entertainment venues remain open. It is also worth noting that September in Lanzarote is the hottest amongst all the Canary Islands.

While holidaying we’d suggest taking a trip to Los Hervideros which is home to some unmistakable natural beauty. Experience the waves crashing on the rocks, winding footpaths, naturally occurring gemstones, and some stunning views.

For a gentler way to spend your days, visiting the beaches around the island will keep you occupied. You won’t get bored discovering the glorious sands that are dotted around Lanzarote and because it won’t be too hectic, you’ll be able to go at your own pace and take in some breathtaking scenery.

Now, we have already mentioned a trip to Timanfaya National Park, but it is definitely worth another recommendation – visiting in September will give you chance to experience the last of the summer sun in a beautiful place – the weather will be absolutely perfect to take a walking tour through the Timanfaya coastal route.

Whatever your plans for September, the weather on the island will be hot, sunny and calm.

Sea temperature

Now out of peak season, October quietens further, but that doesn’t mean you have the island all to yourself – again, thanks to the weather, Lanzarote still gets a lot of visitors.

Highs of 27°c and an average of 23°, the sun is hot enough for you to enjoy sunbathing and with the sea temperature sitting at a lovely 22° it means you still get chance to take a swim or try a water sport now the waters are a little less crowded.

While the days still feel like summer, you will notice that the nights get a tad cooler from now on, dropping down to 19°, but compared to October temperatures in the UK being very autumnal, this really isn’t going to bother you too much.

You could see a couple of days of rain if you’re really unlucky, though with the sun beaming down for 9 hours a day we’re pretty sure you will still only need light clothing and sun cream. The mornings may start off cloudy during October, but don’t let this put you off heading to the beach or going out to explore because the sun will break through in no time. During the autumn the wind isn’t strong (compared to the summer months), although bear in mind there is more chance of storms towards the end of October.

In terms of beaches, you could visit Famara beach, in the northeast of Lanzarote, it has soft sand and waves that are ideal for surfing in. Relaxing on the beach while taking in the scenery of the cliffs should also be on your to do list. Without the bigger resorts and noise coming from bars and fancy restaurants, the nearby town is an escape from the bustling crowds and commercial entertainment. Stay here if you want a peaceful getaway full of natural beauty.

If you’re not tied down to taking your holidays during the school break, then October is truly wonderful. Think about visiting Lanzarote’s oldest winery, along with a bit of wine tasting of course.

Everything starts to decrease now. The temperature drops slightly, although 24°c at its highest during the day is still pleasant if you’re thinking of escaping the cold back home. You’ll also see the sun for 8 hours per day and the sea is warm enough to enjoy.

The rainy days increase, but still only being 3 over the month isn’t cause for concern. If you do happen to get cloudier days while you’re holidaying, then fill your time with trips to museums. Lagomar Museum for instance, in Las Palmas – taking in the architecture and exploring the caves.

On sunnier days, visit one of the many beaches the island boasts. For the warmest sun visit the southern part of Lanzarote – Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise have some of the most beautiful golden sands and clear waters.

November is another perfect month for exploring because the weather is comfortable enough to walk, hike or cycle in. If you want to discover some of the rarities then visit El Golfo, where you can witness the green lake, or lagoon as some prefer to call it. Formed in an old volcano crater, it is a great way to spend your day, or experience it at sunset for a stunning view.

The hours of sunshine per day drops to 6 now and December sees some cooler temperatures – the lowest you could feel is 15°c, and with night time being 17° you’ll need to pack some light jumpers and trousers for these times.

The days however are still quite warm at 19° and in the early 20’s at its highest, meaning the sun will still let you enjoy some time outdoors to get the most out of your winter getaway. The sea ranges in the early 20’s so you should still be fine to take a dip without feeling cold.

It could rain up to 4 days over the month, but you’ll only experience light breezes and sandstorms are rare for this month. If you’re looking to get away from the wintry conditions in the UK, we’re pretty sure you’ll take your chances with the rain forecast in Lanzarote.

Beaches are open year-round thanks to the constant sunshine, as well as complexes and holiday homes remaining open, and you’ll get all you need from nearby shops, cafés and entertainment venues.

If you’re a fan of learning about the culture and history of a place you’re visiting, then what could be better than getting to know all about the famous artist and architect of Lanzarote, Cesar Manrique – he has helped to develop some of the most beautiful sites you’ll witness on such an idyllic island.

Lanzarote cuisine changes a little during winter and you can taste some of their finest stews this season. Dotted all over Lanzarote are several festivals that you can watch or take part in. You’ll also see the island dressed up for the Christmas holiday, as well as being able to watch concerts, visit markets, and see the Santa parades.

If you don’t want to miss out on your traditional Christmas dinner, then look out for restaurants that offer a British menu – but book early because Lanzarote in December is considered the second high season when a lot of tourists want a break away from everyday life to get some winter sun.

Lanzarote, like most of the Canary Islands, is an all-year-round destination and depending on what kind of holiday you want will impact on the month you travel.

If you’re looking for endless summer days where you can work on your tan then travel between June and September, or if you want to get away from the colder weather you’re used to at home and don’t mind the temperatures being a little milder while the sun shines then holiday from November to January.
