September is an ideal month to visit Tenerife. The crowds start to disperse and beaches clear from the peak summer months, but the days and nights remain very warm. We've looked at the most up-to-date weather data for Tenerife, covering the last 12 years up to 2026, plus we've asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about Tenerife weather in September.
What's the weather like in Tenerife in September?
September is an extension of the summer in Tenerife, especially at the start where temperatures are hot but more comfortable than the likes of August. I went at the end of September and it was still very warm with blue skies and people sunbathing on the beach. I was hiking in Tenerife in September and even at the top of Mount Teide which is technically the highest point in Spain at 3,715 m, it was hot and I burnt on the way up as I wasn't expecting the sun to be quite as strong, which was silly!

What should I pack for a holiday in Tenerife in September?
Suncream is needed in Tenerife in September as it's practically the summer still and you should take all your summer clothes if you're having a beach / all inclusive holiday. If you plan to hike and visit higher areas as I did, take some options for layers as it can get colder in the mountains, especially towards the end of the month.

If you want to hike the highest mountain in Spain - Mount Teide at 3,715m - September is a great time to go as it's still hot and you can enjoy the warm temperatures, but it's not as hot as July / August. As the children go back to school, for a cheaper break in September with guaranteed sun, Tenerife is a great option with sunbathing weather.

How warm is it in Tenerife during September?
The temperature is extremely stable in September with average highs of 25℃ and lows just 3℃ lower at 23℃. Of course, the high humidity will make it feel even hotter. The UV index will be high at this time of year, so protection against skin and eye damage is needed. Try to limit exposure between 10am and 4pm. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every few hours, even if it's cloudy, or more frequently after sweating or swimming, and wear UV-blocking sunglasses too, and bear in mind that bright surfaces, such as sand and water increase UV exposure.

You're unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during September. The high humidity and warm temperature will make the breeze feel warm, so any cooling effect will be limted.
How warm is the sea in Tenerife during September?
The water temperature around Tenerife reaches a pleasant 24℃ during September. While generally considered warm, some people might find it a little on the cool side on entering the water.
