While January is no doubt one of the coldest months for Skiathos, you’ll still experience milder temperatures than in the UK – highs can range between 10 and 13°c, and with only 7 days of rain out of the 31 predicted to be wet, the rain shouldn’t hinder a trip this month.

The beach will be too cold to spend the day on and with only 4 hours of sunshine you may only get chance to take a stroll, but with around 60 to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

If you enjoy the outdoors and don’t mind the changeable weather, hire a bike to explore. For those looking for a bit more adventure, you may even find quad bikes to hire too.

You could wander around the heart of the island Skiathos main town will be a lot quieter now and you’ll be able to view it without the crowds, taking in the cosmopolitan vibes, as well as the charming alleyways, hidden corners, and waterfront.

Pack your case for chilly and wet weather during the winter month and be prepared for changes from one day to the next. Taking a relaxed approach as you holiday in February will guarantee you’ll be planning your return before your plane has landed back in the UK!

The climate improves a little in March and the sun will be present for 7 hours per day which means it will start to feel like spring is on its way. It is still cool though and you’ll probably want to bring a jumper or coat to go over your t-shirt.

With the sun setting at around 6.30pm it will be an ideal time to take a walk and catch the sunset before heading to one of the many restaurants for an evening meal.

During the day why not visit Evangelistria Monastery. The historic monument is built on a mountainside north of Skiathos Town. Outside it is surrounded by greenery, while on the inside you’ll find exhibits including manuscripts, gospels, clothing, and books.

The temperatures will consist of highs of 13°c and lows of 4° and there will also be a chance of rain over 5 days of the month. The winds will be light and fresh making it feel a little cooler, but still March is a very pleasant time to come to the island.

As spring arrives in Skiathos, so does the increase in temperature. Highs of 18°c and averages of 15° mean you will want to spend more of your time outdoors. With 9 hours of sun per day you’ll now have more exploration time as well as the opportunity to hit the beach.

Maratha Beach is beautiful at this time of year. Surrounded by pine trees, you’ll find this small sandy beach, with its crystal-clear waters, a great place to relax. It is a popular spot for tourists but if you visit in April, you’ll find somewhere to spend a few hours and with more facilities opening in time for summer, the whole family will be entertained.

As the month goes on you’ll notice the rain becomes less, so if you travel in the later weeks of April, you’ll have more chance for outdoor activities. If you enjoy walking or hiking then why not visit Kastro – accessible by car for part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, making sure you bring provisions and a good pair of shoes. You’ll see the remains of the biggest medieval town and some incredible scenery. Close by is Kastro Beach – recommended just for adults due to the rocks and accessibility, it is a secluded part of the island that will offer peace and tranquillity.

Visit Kanapita Beach – a quiet spot that doesn’t have many amenities surrounding it, thus adding to its charm. From here, you can catch a water taxi or even hire a boat to explore the coast. Hiking is possible thanks to nearby trails and what better way to enjoy 10 hours of sunshine?

If you want to head indoors, then visit Papadiamantis House Museum – dedicated to one of the most prominent Greek writers where you can observe manuscripts and original objects.

There will only be 3-6 days of rain during the May and while the temps of 11° could make it a little chilly, the sun will provide you with longer days and May will no doubt let you find accommodation at a good price.

Sea temperature

The temperatures range in the 20’s now and you’ll see more people on the island as they come for the warmer weather, although it still won’t be as busy as July or August when school holidays begin.

The sea should be warm enough thanks to the sun heating the water over the last few months and it will remain at a comfortable temperature for the next few months.

You’ll be able to spend a day at the beach from now too – Troulos Beach is a popular destination and offers accommodation close by for those that want the beach on the doorstep. It is easy to see why it is Blue Flag awarded, with its clean waters and white soft sand, as well as a variety of facilities and easy access to give you everything you need for a lovely day out.

This month would be a perfect time to explore the sea caves – Skotini and Galazia. They really are nature at its finest, with its wild landscape and captivating beauty. Accessible by boat, you’ll witness stunning scenery before reaching the caves and with the clear waters you’ll even have a chance to dive in and discover the terrain below.

A holiday in Skiathos during peak season is an absolute treat for sunworshippers. July gives you the hottest and driest weather, and your luggage will consist of t-shirts, shorts, and swimwear, as well as ensuring you pack your high-factor sun cream.

With only 2-3 days of rain forecast over the entire month and highs of 29°c, it is well and truly beach season. Gentle breezes give a little respite from the heat and this month really is one of the best to travel.

Places will start to fill up quickly and it’s recommended you book things in advance – from your accommodation to daily activities to restaurant reservations.

If you don’t mind the crowds, then head to Koukounaries Beach – the most famous in Skiathos with its crystal-clear waters and fine white sand we can see why.

With facilities available such as umbrellas and sun loungers, along with eateries, useful amenities, and easy access to the beach, this one has to be on your list.

While some enjoy one beach all day, we know others may prefer to see as much of the island as possible. If this is the case for you, we’d suggest hiring a car to enjoy beach hopping. You can spend a whole day discovering the sands, experiencing the sea at a glorious 24°, and stopping off at the local taverns – what better way to enjoy the sunshine, and with 12 hours per day you’ll have no problem fitting in a plethora of the 60 beaches the island has to offer.

Much like July month, August brings some beautiful weather. The sun shines for 10 hours per day and gives us average temperatures of 25°c with similar highs of 29° and lows of 18° (these are welcome for more comfortable evenings). You probably won’t see any rain, though if you did it wouldn’t last long and would allow you to cool off a little.

Hitting the beach is a must and will likely be a popular choice for families and those looking to top up their tan. Big Banana Beach is a great location situated on the west coast. Here you’ll find sun loungers to hire, as well as pedalos to get you out on the water. The sea temperature is 25° making it great for swimming, and don’t forget your snorkel for some memorable sights.

It is worth noting there is also a Little Banana Beach, part of which is a nudist beach and is more secluded if you want to avoid the crowds.

Walking in this climate is not for everyone, but if you’ve come to Skiathos during the height of summer we’re guessing you like the heat. With that in mind, why not take a trip to the Church of Agios Nikolaos – here you can visit the bell tower and see the panoramic views of the port which will look impressive in the sunlight. Though there may not be as many historical sites as other Greek islands, the ones that Skiathos does hold, are definitely worth venturing to.

September brings us another month of exceptionally good weather. Chances of rain remain low and the temperatures continue in the mid 20’s.

With the sea temperature being a comfortable 24°c it allows those that love the water the chance to enjoy swimming, scuba diving, and snorkelling before the seasons change.

The perfect place for water sports is Agia Paraskevi Beach located in the south. Offering golden sands for those that want to relax, and clear blue waters for the more active of the group to engage in water skiing and other thrilling activities.

September may get a little quieter towards the end of the month as families return home. You’ll still find plenty of restaurants and taverns open though, for you to sample some of the island’s cuisine. Don’t forget to stroll around the gift shops too to pick up some souvenirs.

There are noticeable changes in the weather during October as we welcome the end of summer. The days of rain per month increases to 6, and although this may still not seem like a lot, it is worth considering when booking your getaway.

Highs of 20°c are possible, with averages of 18°. There will be lows of 11° which will make the evenings a lot cooler – bring a light jacket or jumper though and you should be fine.

The sea will be around 21° and this may still be enticing for some tourists. You can expect to enjoy the beach this month, so why not visit Kolios Beach in the south of Skiathos. Being one of the quieter locations it would probably suit those visiting as a couple or even a solo traveller seeking solitude and relaxation. The sand is coarse and the waters are clear, making this an idyllic spot to enjoy the last of the sunshine.

To make the most of your trip we’d suggest visiting Skiathos Town. There will still be a nice buzz of tourism, but it won’t be overcrowded and the blistering heat will have subsided. Take this opportunity to dine at some lovely restaurants, visit clothes shops, gift shops, and more. Spilling into the night, you’ll experience a variety of music from bars and clubs dotted around the town.

As Skiathos prepares to enter the winter season there will be less facilities and amenities open. The island will be quiet and those looking for a peaceful holiday should think about booking in November while accommodation and flights are cheaper

The sun will set much earlier during this month and throughout the day you’ll get 7 hours at temperatures ranging between 13 and 16°c.

If you want to go to the beach, it’s recommended you bring a blanket and a jacket just in case in gets chilly. The sea will be 19° so may be too cold for a long swim, but strolling along the sand and dipping your toes in the water will be a big contrast to November in the UK!

Try Achladies Beach for its golden sand or Kalamaki for its breathtaking views. Either one will give you the chance to witness a beautiful sunset.

Hiring a car and exploring Skiathos in November will be lovely – there won’t be too many people around now and you’ll cover so much of the island. If it does rain during your stay, simply hop in the car and drive to your next destination.

If you consider the conditions in the UK – rain, wind, snow, and ice – Skiathos in December can be very tempting. Not only will you get milder temperatures (10-11°c), but you’ll also get the opportunity to experience a whole different meaning to winter!

While you will not experience snow here, you may get some rainy days. Don’t let this dampen your trip though – if you pack your case sensibly and are open to changing your plans when the weather takes a turn, you can have an enjoyable break.

If you do want to have a swim but don’t fancy braving the sea (we wouldn’t blame you at 17°c), you’d be better off seeking accommodation that offers a heated pool and if you are travelling with children there are some hotels that offer kids clubs which are ideal on the colder days.

Taking a walk if you wrap up, can be a great way to find some hidden gems on the island.

If you holiday during the festive period, make sure you do your research first. Find places that are open during these times and book tables at restaurants or other eating establishments.

Whatever you plan to do, December will guarantee some wonderful memories.

It’s well known that Skiathos is a popular destination because of the number of beaches it has – for anyone looking for a beach holiday destination – this is it.

And while there may not be a big variety of historical monuments as some of the other Greek islands, the ones it does have are beautiful and well worth visiting.

For the hottest weather, visit during the summer months of late May to mid-September. For those seeking a restful getaway, you can book between October and February.

Skiathos is a beautiful part of the world, and you won’t be disappointed no matter what month you go.
