Our guide to the weather in the United States during January
We've looked at the most up-to-date weather data for the United States, covering the last 12 years up to 2024, plus we've asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about the United States weather in January.
What's the temperature like in the United States during January?
January is typically the coolest month in the United States. The temperature reaches around 5℃ during the daytime, falling away to -4℃ at night. The UV index will be low at this time of year, so not something to worry about. However, if you're going to be outside for long periods it's always a good idea to apply a small amount of sunscreen to exposed skin.
Does it snow in the United States during January?
Possibly. There's a chance of snow during January but not as much as you might think. Check the local forecast before you leave home so that you can pack appropriate footwear and clothing.
Does it rain in the United States during January?
January is typically the driest month in the United States. On average, there will be 3 rainy days during the month, amounting to 34.1mm in total. That's much drier than we see in England during August, and therefore not something to be concerned about. Of course, some of that rain will actually fall as sleet, snow, and possibly freezing rain. You're not likely to see a thunderstorm during your trip.
Is it windy in the United States during January?
You're unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during January. With moderate humidity, the wind will feel very cold, so you'll need to wear warm layers.
