We've looked at the most up-to-date weather data for the United States, covering the last 12 years up to 2023, plus we've asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about the United States weather in February.

What's the temperature like in the United States during February?

It's cold in the United States during February. The temperature tops out at around 6℃ during the day, falling away to -3℃ at night. Brrrr! The UV index will be low at this time of year, so not something to worry about. However, if you're going to be outside for long periods it's always a good idea to apply a small amount of sunscreen to exposed skin.

Does it snow in the United States during February?

Yes, although it doesn't snow as much as you might expect. It's worth checking the local forecast a few days before you leave home so that you can pack appropriate footwear and clothing.

Does it rain in the United States during February?

On average, there will be 2 rainy days during the month, amounting to 46.9mm in total. That's broadly comparable with the amount of rain we see in England during the summer months, and would be considered dry. Of course, some of that rain will actually fall as sleet, snow, and possibly freezing rain. You're not likely to see a thunderstorm during your trip.

Is it windy in the United States during February?

You're unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during February. With moderate humidity, the wind will feel very cold, so you'll need to wear warm layers.

Books inspired by the United States

Our hand-picked selection of books to get you in the mood for your United States holiday

Tales of the City

Armistead Maupin

Bored secretary Mary Ann Singleton visits San Francisco on holiday and decides to stay, leaving her dull life in Cleveland behind. She finds accommodation in the home of colourful Anna Madrigal, and meets a wonderfully eclectic mix of people. Set in the late '70s, it's absorbingly easy to read and will leave you fully invested in the lives of its characters. This fabulous novel inspired me to travel to San Francisco! - Claire Harris, travel-lover, Kent

Cosmopolis

Don DeLillo

Follows an eventful day in the life of Eric, a self-made billionaire who gets stuck in traffic in the back of his limo on a journey across New York to get a haircut. He conducts his business and his life from the confined space, his bodyguards worried that he may be a target. Complex but uniquely matter-of-fact, this book will challenge you and make you think.

The Godfather

Mario Puzo

The classic novel about Don Corleone and his crime family set in New York's criminal underworld.

A Little Life

Hanya Yanagihara

A profound and beautifully-written novel about four ambitious US college friends who move to New York to begin their lives and careers after graduating. Deeply disturbing, but with an enduring human love and kindness, this book will move you in a way that none has before. Everyone should read it.

The House on Mango Street

Sandra Cisneros

A coming of age story about Esperanza, a Hispanic child in Chicago, told through a series of vignettes as she attempts to make sense of life and find her own path in a foreign world. Vividly written with Chicago as an interesting backdrop.
