The Scoop: Mykonos

Just saying Mykonos out loud is enough to put you in a party frame of mind. The glamourous Greek island, sometimes described as the Ibiza of Greece, is famous for glorious Cyclades beaches, picturesque villages and a pumping night scene. It’s not all about fun in the sun though, so if you choose to leave the sand for an afternoon’s exploration, you’ll find plenty of historical sites and vibrant traditions to explore.

What to do

First things first when you arrive in Mykonos; taking your pick of stunning beaches! From the trendy Paradise and Super Paradise beaches to the field of umbrellas at Elia and Paraga’s entertainment-lined stretch of sand, if all you want to do is catch some rays, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Chora is the capital of Mykonos and Little Venice is the perfect spot to stroll, dine and eat at any time of the day. A favourite haunt of artists, here you can admire historic houses perched precariously on the edge of the sea, check out art galleries and then party the night away in bars and discos.

Overlooking Little Venice are the iconic Mykonos windmills, made famous as the island’s postcard trademark. From here you can take your own perfect pics with views over the village and the port. For an exciting day trip, take a boat to the island of Delos, a placed entrenched in Greek god mythology, to check out the archaeological site.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Mykonos is really a no-brainer, with so many fabulous options within a stone’s throw of the beach. The high season in July and August brings with it prices to match, but, when you go off-season, you’ll be sure to find some fantastic deals.

If your idea of an indulgent hotel stay includes lounging in a cabana with sheer white drapes, next to a sparkling pool overlooking the ocean, then the Mykonos Grand Hotel and Resort is the place for you. There’s a bar, a spa, fitness facilities and delectable seafood on the menu too, so you’d be forgiven for struggling to step foot outside.

If you’re heading to Mykonos with the family, the Carbonaki Hotel offers a peaceful haven just steps from bars, shops and the Mykonos windmills. The hotel provides different grades of rooms, including family-friendly suites. You can have a sundowner on the terrace, chill out at the bar or take a dip in the hot tub.

Whether it be fine dining by the sea or gyros to nibble on while you stroll around town, Mykonos cuisine will tantalise your taste buds. Everywhere you go, you can enjoy the smell of grilled seafood, so leave some room after breakfast to eat your way around the island.

Known for its fabulous service and elegant ambience, M-eating is also famed for its exceptional Greek cuisine. Housed in a traditional building in town, you can try Sea Bass Tatar, Cycladic Octopus, Ratatouille with Mykonian sausage and Mykonian Honey Pie for dessert.

Hippie Fish (££)

For the quintessential holiday dining experience, head to Hippie Fish on Agios Ioannis Beach. Sit right on the sand to enjoy fish, crab and lobster dishes, then sip on cocktails before taking a nighttime stroll along the magnificent waterfront.

Jimmy’s (£)

When all you want is a fast-food hit or a late-night munch, hit everyone’s favourite spot, Jimmy’s Gyros, right in the centre of town. If you’re lucky, you might even get your photo up on the wall of fame, displaying the faces of other happy customers.
