28th July 2021 by Inside the Travel LabWhat is Latvia famous for? Prepare to be surprised
Close Your Eyes and Think of Latvia. If I asked you, without pause for a heartbeat, what first comes to mind when you think of travel to Latvia, I wonder what I’d hear. Would you feel the salt lick of spray from the ocean, feet squeezing soft sand beneath them? Would you see willows at sunset and aristocratic stone houses, rich plum satin curtains gathered up in gold threads? Or would you be walking through vineyards, chatting with bright blue eyes and splashing liquid through glass to taste...
15th February 2021 by Inside the Travel LabHow to spend three days in Riga
For this 3 days in Riga itinerary, I'm assuming that you'll probably be arriving on a Friday evening and have to head home on Sunday. For that reason, day one is quite short. It allows you to settle into your hotel, unpack, freshen up, take a wonderful walk through the streets and then enjoy dinner and some great drinks. ...
29th January 2021 by Kirsty Leanne14 things to do on a weekend break in Riga
Whilst attending the first-ever Women In Travel Summit in Europe, I had the absolute pleasure of spending a couple of days exploring the beautiful city that is Riga. Having never visited Latvia before, I was super excited to spend a couple of days exploring both a new city and a new country. Then again, who wouldn’t be?...
24th July 2019 by Budget Traveller48 Hours in Riga - Where to eat, sleep & drink
Compact, very walkable and a mishmash of many striking architectural styles: the result of having been ruled across several centuries by the Germans, Swedish and Russians, Riga is one of those rare few cities that quickly gets under the skin, just by walking its streets and observing its architecture and its complex layers of history. It was one of the first cities I visited as a student back in the early 2000’s when Ryanair launched a direct route from Glasgow and remains a sentimental...
22nd January 2021 by Budget Traveller'Latvia Itineraries', my new travel guide to Latvia
I had the luxury of spending a whole month in Latvia in Autumn last year. Most of the places I visit for the blog, I’ll usually spend a few days or a week at most so a whole month was a real luxury. I tried to spend my time wisely and explore as much of this wonderful country as possible within that 1 month. One of the fruits of my micro adventures across Latvia is this new little e-book: Latvia Itineraries which you can download today for free from the blog ( click on the image on the right...
3rd May 2020 by Budget Traveller24 hours in Sigulda, the ‘Switzerland of Latvia’
If you’re planning a trip to Latvia and looking for a perfect day trip from Riga, do make some time in your itinerary to checkout the beautiful Sigulda. Ruined medieval castles, picturesque landscapes, historical and cultural monuments spanning several centuries, tons of adrenaline bursting adventure activities that range from ziplining and hiking to horseback riding and canoeing-there’s a ton of exciting things to do in Sigulda. Add to that a burgeoning gastronomic scene that saw the...
3rd May 2020 by Budget Traveller48 Hours in Liepaja, Latvia’s ‘Windy City’
The sun came out and the long towering pine trees were dead silent. The deep blue sea in the distance glowed in the late autumn sunlight. What a difference a day makes. Barely 24 hours ago we had arrived amidst swirling gusts of rain and strong winds to Liepaja, Latvia’s third largest city located on the sandy fringes of the Baltic Coast about 200 kilometers west of Riga. The rain was ok but oh boy, that almost vertical wind lashing into my face…it reminded me a lot of Edinburgh....
