Hungary is a central European gem, bordered by Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. Its capital, Budapest, is split by the River Danube, with the western side of Buda home to Buda Castle and the Fisherman's Bastion, and the larger eastern side, Pest, known for its nightlife and bar scene. Hungarian cuisine is a delight, with goulash, a beef and vegetable soup-stew, the national dish, and fisherman's soup, made with mixed river fish and paprika, a local favourite. Marzipan, a sweet treat made from ground almonds and sugar, is also popular, and can be seen in the form of a 160-centimetre-tall marzipan model of the Hungarian Parliament building at the Marzipan Museum in Budapest. Hungary is also the home of thermal baths, with over 1,300 in Budapest alone. Spa parties are a popular pastime, and after dark they become electric, with laser beams, trance music and steaming hot mineral-rich waters. And, of course, no trip would be complete without sampling the country's traditional fruit brandy.
