Our guide to the weather and climate in Mykonos

Located on the east side of Greece, you’ll find Mykonos – an island that differs in pace depending on the time of year you visit. There are so many sides to Mykonos – culture, elegance, nightlife, delectable cuisine, and stunning beaches are just some of the reasons to book your holiday here.

Sea temperature

Comparing January in Mykonos to the UK, you’d probably much rather take a trip to the Greek island. You’ll experience long days of sunshine with 12°c highs. Lows could drop to 6°, and night times will be cool, but winter here will still be more pleasant than where you’re used to.

It is advised to bring a few layers with you and a jacket if you want to go exploring – you’ll get 6 days of rain for the whole month and they should only be light showers, but it is worth knowing so you can pack appropriately. Winds will also be noticeable too.

It will no doubt be too cold to spend your days on the beach, but you could enjoy a stroll along the sand. Visit Old Port Beach – a small stretch that offers picturesque views and a relaxing atmosphere. The sea is not recommended for swimming, but it would be too cold for most anyway. If you do want to have a splash around, then opt for accommodation with a heated pool.

Discovering the island is something well worth doing. Why not visit museums to gain some knowledge of the island – especially good on a cloudy day. Aegean Maritime Museum is just one example, which is near to a lot of eating establishments, so you’d be able to spend a while here enjoying the culture and surroundings.

Sea temperature

Temperatures are similar to January, with averages remaining at 9°c. Those looking for a quiet getaway with a relaxed pace can guarantee this in February. You’re likely to get a good deal on your flights and accommodation too, so if you’re not too bothered about sweltering heat then book up this month.

You could still see some rain during the month (around 7 days in total), so it may be wise to pack a waterproof jacket, but bear in mind that the sun will shine for 7 hours per day so you might also want to bring your sunglasses. Bottom line – pack for a mixture of weather during February.

It is not common, but not unheard of for it to snow in February, and this would make for some brilliant photo opportunities – just another thing to think about when deciding if this is the month for you to travel. February is also known for being one of the windiest months.

Again, beaches will be too cold to enjoy all day, but if you wrap up you could stay there for an hour or so to get your dose of vitamin D. Out of season, Kapari Beach will be a quiet place to relax with its clear waters and clean sands. You’ll see a beautiful sunset here if you go a little later too.

The sea will still be too cold to swim in, but brave dipping your toes in for some bona fide holiday fun!

Sea temperature

As the island enters spring, the temperatures don’t really change much. The sea will increase to 16°c and the rainy days will lessen. You’ll now get 9 hours of sun per day which will be enough to boost your mood and let you forget the drab weather back home. You will see the temperatures start to rise towards the end of the month though.

If you’ve holidayed in the winter months before, you’ll notice that March means there are more restaurants and bars beginning to open and you’ll get to enjoy some traditional cuisine. The island is busy preparing for the summer season, and you’ll find lots of enjoyable things to do.

If you fancy a spot of shopping while you’re away, then you’re in the right place. You’ll find a variety of places in the capital city – gift shops, expensive clothes boutiques, and jewellery shops are just a few that make up the narrow streets of Chora.

If you’re on a budget, then why not think about grabbing a blanket and a picnic and heading to the beach. Kalo Livadi Beach is one of the longest in Mykonos so you shouldn’t have any problem finding space, especially in March. You’ll be amazed by the turquoise waters and serene atmosphere at this time of month.

If the beach isn’t your thing and you prefer to go exploring during the day, we’d suggest visiting Delos Island which isn’t far from Mykonos. Steeped in history, you’ll be able to view ancient buildings, monuments, and artefacts. Once back in Mykonos, you can carry on your historical discoveries by going to Archaeological Museum

Sea temperature

The climate improves slightly from April, and the sun will shine for 10 hours per day. You’ll get to fit so much in now that the days are filled with light! High temperatures of 18°c mean you could think about wearing lighter clothes but note that average temperatures of 15° and lows of 11° will mean you might feel chilly from time to time.

There will only be 5 days of rain over the entire month and that means you’ll be more likely to stay outdoors for longer so take advantage of activities such as hiring a catamaran or taking a jeep tour to discover some of the hidden gems of the island.

Beaches could start to get busy, especially when families take their Easter breaks. Paraga Beach is large enough to enjoy and you may even get the opportunity to work on your tan. You’ll be protected from the breeze, making it an ideal destination for April as the winds begin to pick up a little. With golden sands and a scattering of pebbles, this is a lovely beach to visit any month of the year.

The sea remains at 16° and you probably couldn’t stay in it for longer than 5 or 10 minutes. More accommodation will be opening up so you’re more likely to find somewhere with a heated pool.

It will begin to feel like summer is on its way if you take your holiday from May. An impressive 12 hours of sun will fill your days and the high temperatures reach 23°c, with averages sitting at 19°.

At last, the sea temperatures climb to 19° and this may well be warm enough for some to take a dip. If you have been waiting patiently for this, then don’t forget to pack your swimming gear and take a trip to the beach. Elia Beach is an extremely popular stretch of white sand, and with its clear waters you can understand why. All walks of life enjoy this beach and there are plenty of sun loungers to hire and facilities close by.

Visiting Little Venice during May will let you fall in love with this charming and romantic neighbourhood found in the capital. Filled with eateries that look out onto the horizon, you can enjoy the sun setting as you dine with your loved ones. Because it is designed for walking, Little Venice has cobbled narrow streets to stroll down as you take in all the charm this place has to offer.

Rain will only be present for 3 days during the month which means you’ll be able to replace your waterproofs with lighter clothes when packing.

Temperatures increase again in June, and this is what will happen over the next few months. Seeing minimal rain and a whopping 14 hours per day of sun is what gets tourists flocking to the island.

With summer just around the corner, it brings celebration and festivities – June onwards is when Mykonos really comes to life. Don’t worry though, if you do want some relaxation then there are places, if you do your research, that offer just that.

You’ll only need light clothing and with temperatures in the mid 20’s and reaching highs of 30°c, it means hitting the beach will no doubt be at the top of your things to do. Panormos Beach, north of the island, is a large length of soft sand known for its relaxed atmosphere – come here if you want to get away from the masses. Although it’s popular with families, the beach is big enough that it won’t feel too crowded.

June is perfect here due to the winds not being as strong, making the waves calmer and thus swimming being a popular way to pass the time. The sea is 24° which is a great temperature for splashing around or cooling off.

You may enjoy the crowds and prefer a livelier beach – in that case Paradise Beach in the south would suit you. With generous facilities, beach bars, water sports, and nudist friendly areas, the sands here are thriving with tourists.

It’s here – Summer in all its glory! Bask in 26° heat and you’ll guarantee to leave with a tan. You’ll need your highest factor sun cream, and if you’re going to the beach, make sure you get there early to hire umbrellas and sun loungers.

Ornos Beach is beautiful this time of year and it is one of the busiest in Mykonos. A popular choice for those taking their break during the school holidays thanks to the soft sand and calm waters at 24° being incredibly inviting. Thankfully there will be a gentle breeze present which will be welcomed during the 30° highs.

Those seeking a little adventure can book a helicopter tour, giving a memorable view of the island. Horse riding and cycling tours are also a great way to see the countryside and natural beauty.

The hot climate can get too much at times, even for the most avid sun worshippers. If you need a little solace from the heat, you could attend a mosaic workshop or a traditional Greek cooking class.

Now everything is open for tourists to enjoy, you’ll find something new to do every day if you so wish.

Monthly rainfall

25

Sea temperature

The climate drops in August, but only by a degree or so, which means you’ll barely notice. With highs of 29°c and 13 hours of sun each day, we’re sure there will be no complaints!

1 day of rain is possible, but not very likely and the breeze continues throughout the month as it remains windy.

If your holiday is going to consist of beach days, partying, and nightlife then you cannot miss going to Super Paradise Beach – one of the most famous party beaches in Mykonos. It is popular for its clean sand and clear waters, but even more so for its party scene. It can get noisy as the day progresses with music coming from both sides of the beach, as well as nearby bars and venues.

A more desirable option for families and those wanting to relax is Agios Stefanos Beach. It has lovely views, facilities, water sports, and staying later will result in a striking sunset.

If the heat isn’t too much, why not visit the capital of Mykonos – Chora. With the sun shining you’ll get to see the bright white houses with their colourful balconies, and don’t miss the chance to see the windmills – a symbol of the island’s history. Narrow streets, churches, cafés, and boutiques all add to the charm of such a magical place.

Entering September, the climate will still be pleasant but there will be fewer tourists as people go back to normal daily life. You’ll also find that prices come down too, yet most entertainment venues and activities remain open. Younger travellers may enjoy the last months of beach parties and nightlife before the seasons change.

Average temperatures fall to 24°c, with highs of 27°. The sea is still enjoyable at 22° and activities will be more comfortable now the climate isn’t so hot. Mild winds offer a refreshing breeze if those temperatures are still a little high. You may see rain for 4 days of the month, but this shouldn’t affect your travel plans.

Sightseeing is one the best things to do this month and what better way to take in the scenery of the island than by going on a cruise tour. There are quite a lot to choose from so do your research and pick from sailing around the beaches, to discovering Greek Mythology, or just taking a relaxing sail – the choice is yours.

A Rose Tinted World In Mykonos in September it is still hot and sunny. But not too hot that you feel that you cannot walk around in the heat. On an evening you may need a light cardigan or wrap, but it also is not that cold. A Rose Tinted World

Rainfall increases from this month and could happen over the course of 8 days. While temperatures are still in the high teens, it’s noticeably cooler than the summer months – though when you consider that they can reach the 20’s and beach days are possible even in October, compared to the autumn weather back home, we know where we’d rather be!

Days can be a little windy, but you’ll still get around 9 hours of sun so the breeze shouldn’t bother you too much. The sea is warm enough to swim in at 22°c and because it won’t be busy this month, you’ll definitely find a spot on the beach.

If you’re holidaying in October, you probably like a more relaxed pace so head to Mersini Beach in the northeast. There aren’t any facilities or nearby eateries, but if you come prepared, you’ll enjoy shallow waters, soft sand, and rocky views to make for a blissful day.

You have the option of hiring a car if you want to explore the island and you may even find some hidden gems of Mykonos the further you venture.

Partygoers will still be able to enjoy the nightlife, just bear in mind that not everything will be open like it was in the height of summer.

Cruise Mummy The weather in Mykonos in October is perfect! It's not too hot like it can be in the summer, yet its usually warm enough to sunbathe. Early October is the best time to visit, because as the month progresses it can get a little cooler and with more chance of rain. The sea is still warm enough to swim in October. Cruise Mummy

The climate drops further now Mykonos starts to enter the winter months and you’ll see daily averages of 14°c, with highs only climbing to the late teens. Jumpers and trousers will most likely be needed for the cooler nights of 11°.

While the sun will be present for 8 hours per day, the rain will also show up for 10 days of the month, so bear this in mind when planning your trip.

With sea temperatures at 19°, you might want to take a quick dip, though with the breeze it could get a little chilly for anything longer. If you do still want to get out onto the water, think about hiring a canoe and take in a little scenery as you venture out.

Visit Kalafatis Beach which has idyllic landscape, golden sand, and crystal-clear waters. It may not be warm enough to spend the whole day there, but if you take some beach games, you’ll soon warm up while enjoying some winter sunshine.

Hiking and sightseeing are typical for this time of year with tourists booking their break specifically for this. Armensistis Lighthouse is a secluded attraction that can be witnessed with a stunning sunset as its backdrop if timed just right.

Wine lovers can indulge in a wine tasting session, taking the opportunity to sample the flavours of the Greek island, while viewing the vineyards and beautiful scenery.

Winter is here and this brings colder weather. 10°c averages and highs of just 13°. Now the sea is 17°, it’s most likely a tad cool to swim in, but you could still take a stroll on the beach and let the water lap over your feet. On the sands close to Mykonos Town you’ll also see a few locals dotted about this time of year.

Take into account that a lot of beach clubs, facilities, and restaurants will close for winter, but if you are looking for a quiet getaway from the weather back home, Mykonos is perfect. Along with reduced prices on flights and accommodation, you’re more likely to get some budget friendly Greek cuisine as well.
