Algarve, Portugal is an idyllic coastal destination boasting stunning beaches and a mild climate, making it an ideal place to visit in September. We've looked at the most up-to-date weather data for the Algarve, covering the last 12 years up to 2024, plus we've asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about the Algarve weather in September.

What's the weather like in the Algarve in September?

Carrie Ann Lightley For me, the weather in the Algarve is perfect in September! It’s warm enough to sunbathe during the day – with temperatures around the mid-twenties – but not too hot to do more active things like biking or long walks exploring. I definitely needed a light jacket in the evenings to keep my shoulders warm during my favourite Algarve activity – watching the gorgeous sunsets from the beach. Answered by Carrie Ann Lightley

What should I pack for a holiday to the Algarve in September?

Carrie Ann Lightley My packing essentials for the Algarve in September are swimwear, sunglasses, and beach dresses. And always remember mosquito repellent – I forgot last time and suffered as a result! Remember that light jacket or jumper for when the temperature drops in the evenings, and I like to have plenty of books to read on relaxing beach days. Answered by Carrie Ann Lightley

What's great about the Algarve in September?

Carrie Ann Lightley September on the Algarve is a great time for sun-seekers who want a bit of peace and quiet. The busier summer holiday season has ended so it’s not as crowded, which is perfect for me travelling as a wheelchair user. It’s the time to enjoy long, lazy beach front lunches and those stunning evening sunsets. Answered by Carrie Ann Lightley

How warm is it in the Algarve during September?

The temperature reaches around 25℃ during the daytime in September, falling away to 20℃ at night. The UV index will be high at this time of year, so protection against skin and eye damage is needed. Try to limit exposure between 10am and 4pm. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every few hours, even if it's cloudy, or more frequently after sweating or swimming, and wear UV-blocking sunglasses too, and bear in mind that bright surfaces, such as sand and water increase UV exposure.

Does it rain in the Algarve during September?

On average, in September you'll see rain on just one day in the month. In other words, you shouldn't see any of the wet stuff. There's a small chance that you'll catch a thunderstorm during your trip.

Is it windy in the Algarve during September?

You're unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during September. With moderate humidity and mild air temperatures, the breeze will have a slight cooling effect.

How warm is the sea in the Algarve during September?

The water temperature around the Algarve reaches a pleasant 21℃ during September. While generally considered warm, some people might find it a little on the cool side on entering the water.

Vale da Lapa Algarve – a family stay in the autumn sun

18th December 2023 by Globalmouse Travels

The Algarve is beautiful at any time of year but as the grey sets in during a UK autumn, the sunshine of this Portuguese region is particularly welcome. Late October sunshine feels almost as warm as summer at times and sunbathers on the beaches soak up the rays. We were so happy to jet off to the Algarve for October half term. A wonderful time of year to be there. We stayed at Vale da Lapa, a resort of villa accommodation set around pools, a restaurant and a few other onsite activities. We had...

The beach we decided to visit was...

Salema Beach Review in February (Praia da Salema, Portugal)

28th February 2024 by Travel Vixta

Salema, with its unspoiled coastline and picturesque surroundings, looked to exceed our expectations, offering a serene escape from the bustling crowds often associated with popular tourist destinations like Lagos in Portugal at this time of year or the Costa Del Sol in Spain.
