10 things to do in Bangkok

With heavy traffic, huge high-rise buildings and oppressive humidity, it can take a while to adjust to life in Bangkok. Thailand’s capital is a big, chaotic city, but don’t let this put you off. As you explore further you’ll find opulent palaces, colourful markets and all kinds of nightlife. When I visited Thailand for the first time, my friend told me I shouldn’t spend any time in Bangkok on my way to Koh Samui. “There’s not really much to do there but shopping and it’s dirty”...

The last time I saw Thailand

Like Bourdain, I’ve been fortunate to have visited Thailand a few times. Three to be precise. The last time I saw Thailand was just after Xmas, 2018. After the blissfully meditative humdrum life of Luang Prabang a return to Bangkok was a return to the comfort of chaos, of extremes that is the DNA of all my best backpacking memories in South East Asia. No one ever forgets that first intense zap of muggy humid heat that...

Thailand is by far the most visited country in Asia, and one of the most popular countries to attract tourists from around the world. It’s renowned for gorgeous beaches, lush jungle, interesting culture and history, and amazing street food. It’s also pretty cheap! On my first ever backpacking trip at 18, Thailand was the first destination we landed in. I remember arriving in a sweaty, chaotic Bangkok and being almost instantly drawn in with its energy and buzz. I’ve returned several times...

Midnight in Bangkok, Thailand

A few hours before midnight, we got picked up from our hotel in Bangkok for a chance to experience the city in a way we wouldn’t have otherwise. Our day had started with one of the most popular spots in the city (the Grand Palace, Khlongs and Wat Arun – see it all here) but one of the best ways to truly enjoy a city is to go where the locals go which is perhaps why I enjoyed this evening bit so much. See, this evening, we would be off on a food tour and to be perfectly honest, I’m...
