Algarve, Portugal is an ideal destination for British tourists looking for a sunny holiday spot with plenty of activities, even during the winter months. We've looked at the most up-to-date weather data for the Algarve, covering the last 12 years up to 2024, plus we've asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about the Algarve weather in December.

What's the weather like in the Algarve during December?

The Rare Welsh Bit Fairly mild, yet not too cold (bring a jacket for the evenings though!) - around 14-18°C. December is the Algarve's wettest month, so remember to pack an umbrella with you (although it's unlikely it'll rain every single day!) Answered by The Rare Welsh Bit

What should I pack for a holiday in the Algarve during December?

The Rare Welsh Bit During the day, it's usually warm enough to wear T-shirts and shorts, or dresses, but it pays to pack a pair of jeans just in case the temperature drops. As it can be rainy in the Algarve in December, you might want to pack a light raincoat too. For night time, bring a jacket to keep you warm. On your feet, you'll probably find that trainers or sandals are a comfortable option for day-time wear. At night, however, feel free to don your favourite pair of heels for a romantic dinner with your partner, or perhaps a trip to a local wine bar. Answered by The Rare Welsh Bit

Anything else to be aware of when travelling to the Algarve during December?

The Rare Welsh Bit Be aware that, as December is off-peak season for the Algarve, some tourist attractions (like the local waterpark, for example) may not be running during the time of your visit. If visiting during Christmas (as I did), you'll need to ensure you book Christmas Day dinner in advance and, while many venues remain open on Christmas Eve, many will, of course, be shut on Christmas Day. Answered by The Rare Welsh Bit

What's the temperature like in the Algarve during December?

The temperature is extremely stable in December with average highs of 17℃ and lows just 4℃ lower at 13℃. The UV index will be moderate at this time of year, so not something to worry about for the average person. However, if you're going to be outside for long periods it's worth wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses. Remember that bright surfaces, such as water and sand increase UV exposure.

Does it rain in the Algarve during December?

December is typically the wettest month in the Algarve. On average, there will be 2 rainy days during the month, amounting to 37.6mm in total. That's much drier than we see in England during August, and therefore not something to be concerned about. There's a small chance that you'll catch a thunderstorm during your trip.

Is it windy in the Algarve during December?

You're unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during December. With moderate air temperatures, any breeze will feel cool.

How warm is the sea in the Algarve during December?

The water around the Algarve is around 17℃ during December. It will feel a little on the cool when first entering, but you'll warm up quickly. Most kids will have no problem with this temperature, but those who feel the cold are unlikely to want to swim.
