Marrakech long weekend deals

Located above the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is notably the most important of Morocco's former imperial cities with its red-walled palaces and powder-pink ramparts that circle 19km of crowded souqs.

Sitting on the edge of the Sahara desert, this southern market town is steeped in history and culture as well as the sights and sounds of a modern, bustling city. It's certainly not a petrified piece of history that visitors come to stare at.

This isn’t somewhere you can simply pass through. You really need to immerse yourself in its culture, dining alfresco in the Djemaa el-Fna, chatting with snake charmers and getting traditional scrub downs in the local hammam.

The best times to visit Marrakech are from March to May or September to November. Winter can be stunning during the day time, but nights can get really cold. Summer can see temperatures reach unpleasant highs of as much as 45C, so probably best to stay away at this time. Also worth noting that during Ramadan, many restaurants are closed during the day and business hours tend to be reduced.

Mosques and many other religious shrines are not open to non-Muslims and worth noting, in Muslim culture, the left hand is used for personal hygiene so should not be used to handle food! Who knew?

Unwanted company from locals in Marrakech can be quite daunting, ask for directions if you're lost (probably best to ask shop owners), but don't feel bad about declining unwanted advances, just keep it polite.

There's so much to do and see in Marrakech, from gazing out on the iconic Koutoubia or wandering the Bab Doukkala market to sights like the stunning Bahia Palace, the gardens of the Jardin Majorelle and the Medersa Ali Ben Youssef - why wouldn't you book your next trip now?
