Ryanair announces London Southend Airport base and flights from 2019

Ryanair is opening a new base at the somewhat confusingly named 'London Southend Airport' in, umm, Essex - from April 2019.

With three aircraft and an investment of $300 million, Ryanair clearly see Southend as a viable alternative for future expansion and air travel opportunities. The airline will be offering 13 routes to 8 different countries:

  • Alicante, Barcelona Reus, Bilbao, Málaga and Palma in Spain
  • Brest - France
  • Corfu - Greece
  • Cluj, Romania
  • Dublin - Ireland
  • Faro, Portugal
  • Milan Bergamo and Venice in Italy
  • Košice, Slovakia

With a proposed 55 weekly flights, the company are hoping to be able to deliver 1 million passengers a year from its new base.

David O’Brien, Ryanair's Chief Commercial Officer, said:

"We are pleased to add London Southend Airport to our UK base network...Ryanair guests travelling to and from London and the Essex area can now enjoy low fares on a choice of 13 routes through London Southend’s exceptionally passenger friendly terminal."

London Southend have an ambitious strategy to expand the airport, hoping to welcome 5 million passengers a year by 2022 in an effort to ease London's airport capacity crisis.
