7 amazing places to visit in Old Town Prague

Old Town is one of the most popular areas in Prague. Firstly, because it’s a historically significant place, where events took place that decided Czech history over the past 100 years, and secondly thanks to the many beautiful sights that can be discovered here.

So, which of these sights will find their way onto your list during your stay in Prague?

The Powder Tower

Standing on the exact starting line for the ‘King’s Path’, the Power Tower created an entrance point from the east into Prague’s city centre during olden times.

Today you will be able to wonder at the masters’ architectural skills in the late Gothic style, and during open hours you can also climb the 186 stairs that lead to the viewpoint on top. From here you will be able to count the fabled towers that make Prague the “city of a hundred spires.”

The Municipal House

The famous Art Nouveau building, which stands on the very spot of its even more opulent predecessor - ‘The King’s Court’, which was the primary place of residency for Czech sovereigns during the 15th century.

Smetana Hall makes the Municipal House ever more interesting. The Hall acts as a concert venue for classical music and the building’s décor were designed by celebrated Czech artists, such as Mikolšš Aleš and Alfons Mucha.

The Old Town Hall

Although only its torso has been preserved to this day, an authentic period atmosphere is still present in the complex provided by several representative rooms, the Gothic chapel and the Romanesque underground spaces.

The Old Town Hall’s outside instalment is just as enticing thanks to its astronomical clock and figurines of the twelve apostles. It’s said that not witnessing the apostles’ march, which takes place at the top over very hour, is like not having visited Prague at all.

Ungelt

Hidden in a tangle of winding narrow streets leading from the Old Town Square towards Nšmśstí Republiky (Republic Square), this courtyard, which originally served as a pleasant merchant’s base, is perfect for taking a load off after a day well spent discovering the city’s historical sights.

This area acts as a relatively secluded area away from the hustle and bustle of Prague’s city life.

Crusader’s Square

An especially important transport intersection in the past - it is here that the King’s Path continued along what used to be the only bridge leading to Prague Castle.

It’s true, this square will allow you entrance to the much talked about Charles Bridge, but there is more to be seen here.

There is a port located here where you can go to board a river cruise provided by Prague Venice Boat Trip. Their cruises offer commentary during their hour-long round trip cruise on the Vltava.

Marišnské Nšmśstí

Apart from the building complex well known as the Clementinum, where the National Library is currently located, you can also explore Marišnské nšmśstí and discover the interesting sculptural décor of the New Town Hall designed by Ladislav Å aloun.

You should also be sure to see Tereza Fountain made by Všclava Pršchner - the fountain consists of a half nude woman holding jugs of water and is the allegorical statue of the Vltava River.

Christmas Markets on the Old Town Square

The last point on our list is the Old Town Square - the focal point of all social affairs that took place in the Old Town’s history. However, now we are mentioning the square in connection to this festive time of year. Christmas markets will be held on the square until Jan. 6th, 2020 and have been named one of the most beautiful markets in the world. Don’t miss out on this special occasion and enjoy the holiday atmosphere here in the heart of Europe!
