Historical attractions in Lanzarote

The most easterly and oldest island of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has a long rich history that began over 22 million years ago when the isle was first created by volcanic activity. The House of Cesar Manrique

The most famous resident of Lanzarote, Cesar Manrique was an artist born in 1919 and his house still has plenty of his works on display while there are also works by other local artists such as Joan Miro. Another reason that Manrique’s home is worth a visit is that it incorporates the natural landscape into the architecture with the five main being formed from volcanic bubbles.

Manrique is also such a popular figure on the island because of his campaign to make Lanzarote a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which was granted in 1993. He left the island to travel and returned at a time when Lanzarote was pushing its tourism industry. His campaign was to ensure that there were adequate safeguards in place to ensure that the culture and attractions of the island were preserved. Much of his work is also on display in his house.

Castillo de Santa Barbara

This fort is the oldest in all of the Canary Islands and is located in Teguise at the top of the Guanapay peak giving those who venture to the top great views across the surrounding plains. The fort was built back in the 16th century by Sancho de Herrera and later expanded; it fell into disrepair but was restored to its former glory while also now housing the Museo del Emigrante Canario which tells the history of migration to and from the Canary Islands.

Timanfaya National Park

This national park was formed by numerous volcanic eruptions and over time has created a strange but impressive sight. The reserve is 5,107 hectares of a lunar like environment and getting to the top of the Montana Rajada gives you some superb views of the wonderful terrain all the way out to the sea. Palacio Spinola

Also in Teguise, the Palacio Spinola is a huge palace located in the Plaza de la Constitucion and was constructed between 1730 and 1780. Eventually, the palace was given one of the most prominent families on the island, the Spinola’s, which is where it gets its name from.

The palace’s modern-day use is for the Canary Islands government but you can still come to admire the beautiful architecture and check out the museum inside which has plenty of period furniture on display.

Mirador del Rio

The Mirador del Rio is a striking observation point that was originally built as a strategic maritime observation post to watch for invaders. It is built over several levels of volcanic rock cliff face and is well worth a visit for the views of the neighbouring Canary Island of Isla Graciosa and the North West coast of Lanzarote.
