Visit the city’s Gilbralfaro Castle
Malaga’s most famous landmark, Gilbralfaro Castle is a must-see for any new visitor to the beautiful city. The castle ruins sit just above the Alcazaba fortress, originally built in 1040 and today one of the largest Muslim military installations found in Spain. You enter by a ramp and passing under “Arco de Cristo†(Christ’s Arch). The arch opens into a set of beautifully landscaped gardens specked by bubbling fountains and embellished with jasmine, bougainvillaea and honeysuckle. Within the castle, you will also find an archaeological museum where you can admire various Roman and Moorish pieces from the Middle Ages found within the ruins of the fortress. To top it all off, the castle’s high altitude and strategic location translate into the most beautiful scenic view of the city you can get. Best of all, entrance is free on Sundays.

Originally built in the 14th century as a shipyard, it was transformed throughout the centuries first into a convent, then into a military barrack, serving as a hospital at one point and finally as a school. Today, it is one of the city’s architectural gems and features within it some of the freshest local produce such as fruits, fish, meat, cheeses and seafood at unbelievable bargain prices. It’s a great place for a quick and delicious lunch or to do some quick shopping for preparing a delightful home-cooked meal.
EXTRA: If you have some time, make sure to visit the Picasso Museum, which features some of the artist’s work as well as work by artists who inspired him. As Malaga is the claimed birthplace of the infamous artist, it would be wrong to miss out on this opportunity!
