Europes most affordable destinations

Planning to travel on a budget is always a time-consuming task but there are plenty of destinations in Europe where you won’t have to put so much effort into making sure your Euros go further. Whether you’re looking for a sun holiday, a city break or an adventure getaway - there is something for you in Europe and we’re about to show you exactly where you can go without worrying about emptying your bank account.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and sits right on the margins of the Atlantic Ocean. The seven hills that surround it coupled with the proximity to the water provide tourists with some unique scenic landscapes. Its architectural gems and easy-going attitude have made Lisbon a popular tourist destination in recent years.

Why we love it: You get all the flashy things of a European capital for practically half the price! Allow yourself to splurge and stay at a luxurious hotel - you’ll still have plenty of money left for exploring the city, enjoying delicious cuisine and venturing out to the nearby beaches if you tire of the urban scene.

Prague, Czech Republic

The City of a Hundred Spires, Prague has become a more popular tourist destination in the most recent years. Established as the capital of the ancient Bohemian Kingdom, the city has continuously played a pivotal role in Central Europe since the Middle Ages producing today a vibrant city with numerous historical sites to offer its visitors.

Why we love it: Prague’s historical centre has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and includes a number of beautiful monuments for visitors to see. Couple this incredible historical heritage with affordable accommodation and dining options and you’ve got yourself a great European holiday deal!

Crete, Greece

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the 5th largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. It was once the centre of the Minoan Civilisation which is now considered one of the earliest recorded civilisations in Europe. Today, the island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece, due to its stunning beaches and amazing tropical weather. But the island’s long-dated birth also produces today an amazingly diverse mix of remnants of different civilisations all in one place.

Why we love it: Greece’s recent financial turmoil has produced an unfortunate scene of instability in the country. This crisis, however, has resulted in an incredible opportunity for travellers looking for a quiet beach scene at spectacular affordable prices. While flights will still be a bit of a splurge, accommodation and dining options are easy to find for cheaper prices.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is Turkey’s cultural and financial hub. Its location on both sides of the Bosphorus (the strait between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea) creates scenic views and turns the city into a physical and cultural link between Europe and Asia. The city’s ancient past (it was originally established some 8000 years ago) has produced a city rich in cultural and historical monuments. And most local (but world-famous) attractions can be found in Sultanahmet district, or the Old Town.

Why we love it: Istanbul is cheap and perfect for all kinds of holidaymakers. Cheap flights, budget hotels and affordable dining options make it perfect for families looking for a city break or couples searching for a romantic escape.

Faroe Islands

A mostly unknown European destination, the Faroe Islands are a group of 18 islands set in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean halfway between Iceland and Norway. Although these treeless islands are self-governing, they belong to the Danish Kingdom. The best time to visit is between May and September when the weather is more pleasant and conducive for outdoor activities such as bird watching and hiking.

Why we love it: The Faroe Islands offer great value-for-money opportunities for avid bird watchers and hikers. The government has also subsidized helicopters and boats that function as buses linking the islands, making it incredibly affordable to explore the entire archipelago.
