Top 5 snorkelling sites in Malta and Gozo

For snorkelling lovers who dream of discovering the stunning sea-life of Malta and Gozo, the islands offer several locations idyllic locations. All you'll need is the appropriate diving equipment such as a mask, a snorkel, and flippers to experience the magic of underwater life in Malta and Gozo.

Malta offers exciting snorkelling opportunities to divers who come on holiday to the island. Owing to a spectacular selection of spots, which are all located close to one another, no location on the island is beyond your reach.

But there's more, Malta and Gozo play host to several lavish hotels that offer everything you could want from a luxurious stay on the island. The crystal clear waters surround many spots such as Comino’s Blue Lagoon, the Paradise Bay, Siggiewi’s Ghar and St. Paul’s Bay.

As snorkelling and diving are pretty common on the island, all equipment is easily accessible at affordable rates. Snorkelling and diving fanatics can also buy or hire flotation gear from nearby stores.

Tourists who require a guided snorkelling adventure can benefit from local diving teams that happily accompany them to their snorkelling adventures. They provide accurate and interesting descriptions related to the incredible sea life present under the seas of Malta.

There are also plenty of caves located underwater. Therefore, it’s a good idea to take help from local divers. Beginners or first-timers may find it difficult to explore the rocky beaches of Malta and must be guided through professional or local snorkelling adventurers.

Blue Lagoon in Comino is crowded on summer days. There are many other sites that offer exciting snorkelling experiences to local and global divers.

Here are 5 of the most popular scuba diving and snorkelling sites in Malta and Gozo:

1. Ghar Lapsi, Malta

Being a local beauty spot, it is pretty crowded in summer. It is a small inlet below an extraordinary coastline, mostly used by local fishermen. All divers who like to explore marine life swim out of the inlet along the coast to witness the incredibly scenic underwater life.

2. Gnejna Bay, Malta

Although it is rockier than other north-western bays, divers can swim along the outer sides and pass the spot known as the Chicken rock.

3. Hondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo

Thanks to the crystal clear waters, this is a popular spot among snorkelers and has caves at water level. Anyone can reach to the sea from ladders. Undeniably, it is one of the most naturally beautiful spots that give you a sense of peace and tranquillity.

4. Fomm ir-Rih, Malta

This favourite spot has offered many exciting snorkelling experiences to divers. Although the beach is quite pebbly, that doesn’t stop anyone from having some fun. Just be sure the sea is calm before going swimming in it.

5. Wied il-Għajn, Malta

This is beyond Marsascala town on the tip of the harbour. There is a reef that stretches along the sea across the harbour mouth. Beautifully serene but beware of the passing boats and the currents and stay safe.

There are lots of other interesting beaches to explore across Malta. Take a look at the post Off the beaten track beaches in Malta and Four beautiful sandy beaches in Malta.

Discovering Malta, with no smartphone or guidebook

14th November 2023 by Budget Traveller

We stumble down the sulphur-yellow dirt track, no sign of Claire’s secret beach. In the past 15 minutes we have been honoured with just the odd lonesome goat for company and the swallows, dancing above our heads. I take a slurp of my water. It is past midday but already the April sun feels strong on our skin. We reach a dead end. Force of nature implores me to look at my phone for answers. According to Google Maps, the track or beach does not exist. We are in no-mans lands. I look up again,...
