Christmas market trips to Nuremberg

Last year about this time, I highlighted Christmas in Cologne as one of my wintertime favourites. This year I’ll mention another one of my top German Christmas Market hotspots: Nuremberg.

Nuremberg is by many accounts the biggest and most popular Christmas markets in all of Germany. Set in the city’s main square, it is actually a few separate markets but like urban sprawl, the stands full of shiny toys, steaming mugs of mulled wine, and merchants serving up tasty dishes extends out down all of the city’s inner arteries, making the market feel even larger than it is.

Some top tips for making the most of your Nuremberg Christmas experience:

Shop in the Afternoon. It is just too crowded to shop and carry around your bags in the evening. Come in the afternoon when stalls are open but the crowds aren’t at the market. There are tons of great ornaments and other haberdashery perfect for a person on your Christmas list.

Come Hungry. I’ve been to many Christmas markets and must say, Nuremberg puts on the best buffet. There is the classic market stuff (sausages and what not) but they have all of the traditional German food out. It’s not the cheapest in town, but come on - you’re here for the experience.

Get Accommodation within Walking Distance. You don’t need to stay within the city walls, but be sure that you get accommodation that isn’t more than a 15-20 minute walk into town (less if you’re not so mobile). The historic centre is a maze and a hazardous trap for cars in the best of times, but with the market, it is absolute madness. Driving expressly NOT encouraged.

Don’t forget the rest of the sights. Nuremberg Castle, the city walls, Albrecht Durer’s studio, and the former Nazi Rallying Grounds are just a few of the great Nuremberg sights. Be sure to check out the other amazing stuff on offer.
