The Christmas Market in Nice, France

With its wide stretch of beach and lovely blue Mediterranean waters, Nice is famous as one of the best places to visit in Europe in the summertime, but this pretty city also makes an ideal winter getaway destination. It's just a short 2 hours 50 minutes hop from London airports, cheap flight are plentiful, and the weather in Autumn and Winter months hovers at a respectable 10℃ to 12℃.

The first thing you'll notice this time of year is the lack of crowds, so that you can enjoy the city unencumbered as it prepares for the Christmas season. The annual holiday market is set up on Place Massena, just at the edge of picturesque Vieux Nice.

The French Riviera is not known for its snowfall, but the fake snow on the pretty Christmas trees that grace the market look almost like the real thing. The Christmas stalls sell gifts and food and, of course, wonderful vin brulé (mulled wine). There are plenty of activities to keep the kids happy - ice skating, the giant ferris wheel, trampolines and fun houses.

Christmas markets in northern Europe are set to be extremely busy in the post-pandemic years, and so a trip to beautiful Nice during the Christmas season could make for the perfect trip. You can find some great Nice hotel and holiday deals on our comparison page. When you tire of the mulled wine and “snow-covered” trees, you can walk a few short meters away to enjoy a pleasant stroll on the beach. Clearly, the best of both worlds.
