Monarch airlines collapses into administration
Shock news - Monarch Airlines has collapsed into administration today. Monarch was the very first airline I flew on as young boy and the experience is still vivid in my mind. Today is a sad day.
So what happened? Yesterday, Monarch Airlines failed to gain a renewal of its Atol licence. Without being able to sell Atol protected holidays the board decided to place the company into administration with KPMG. The airline was already on an emergency extension of it's licence and so this collapse was anticipated. The Civil Aviation Authority and KPMG had already put in place plans and so the official response this morning has been well prepared.
Have you booked a package holiday flying with Monarch?
As long as you made your booking before 2 October you will be Atol protected and will get a refund. The administrator should contact you, but keep an eye on the media.
Have you booked a flight on Monarch?
Atol protection doesn’t normally apply to flight only deals, so you’re vulnerable. If you paid with a credit card and the booking cost you more than £100 they will refund you. Contact them today. If you paid via a debit card then you might be out of luck. If you have travel insurance, you should check it now. Remember, you might have travel insurance that you don't know about bundled with your current account. If you're not covered by travel insurance you'll have to wait and see whether the administrator will compensate passengers.
I’m stuck overseas!
If you’re on a package holiday, a flight home will be arranged for you at no cost to you. If you flew out on a flight only booking you might need to arrange your own flights home, but keep watching the media as the situation is developing rapidly. Ryanair will be rubbing their hands with glee.
