Port Grimaud; The ‘Little Venice’ of France

On our recent trip to the south of France there was one place I knew I wanted to return to; Port Grimaud. I’d visited about 14 years previously with my parents and brother as part of a cruise and we all had fond memories of this cute little town.

If I told you Port Grimaud is often nicknamed ‘Little Venice’, you’d quickly understand upon seeing the small town. It’s built around a series of canals flanked by adorable, colourful houses.

Port Grimaud was created in the 1960s on former marshland. The marshes were modified by a French architect and canals were created in the same way as those in Venice, but with houses built in a more French style - similar to those in nearby Saint Tropez.

Of course, the best way to see Port Grimaud is from the water, so one of the first things we did after arriving was to rent a small boat so we could explore.

Port Grimaud is mostly car-free and all of the houses seemed to have boat parking rather than car parking! Imagine being able to just sail up to the front of your house and park up.

There isn’t a massive amount to do and see in Port Grimaud beyond wandering the streets, admiring the architecture, taking pictures of pastel-coloured houses and just generally relaxing. But, it’s a really great place to just enjoy a few quiet hours at a slower pace.

If you’re visiting Saint Tropez, Port Grimaud is only around 7 kilometres away and is well worth a detour. It seems a world away from the glitz and glamour of Saint Tropez and is much more chilled and laid-back.

You’ll find a large open-air market in Port Grimaud that’s usually set up on a Thursday and Sunday morning. I believe there’s also a night market on at specific times during the summer too.
