8th February 2021 by Stuart

It's Chriiiiiiiiiiistmmaaaaaaaaasss!! Well, no actually, it isn't. But if you could see my inbox - full up with countless snowy and festive wintery travel deals - you'd definitely think it was close. September is clearly the month for change: hazy sunshiney memories begin to take a backseat, superseded by thoughts of wintery getaways. With all this in mind, and added to the fact it's often more advantageous to beat the rush and book your Chrimbo break early, we're celebrating with a whole...

Booking a Christmas market break

8th February 2021 by Stuart

With late summer daylight beginning to lose its battle with encroaching autumnal darkness, thoughts inevitably begin to turn to the “C” word. Yep, Christmas is fast approaching and, love it or loathe it, it eventually claims us all! While many people look to escape in search of some much-needed winter sun, more and more are attempting to kick-start a full-on festive feeling by booking a Christmas market break. But with more Christmas markets popping up in so many countries every...

Prague Christmas markets

8th February 2021 by Stuart

Standing in the centre of Prague's Old Town Square market, I became aware that this was possibly the most "Christmassy" I've ever felt in my life. The last few years have seen an enormous surge in the number of people wanting to kickstart their Christmas festivities with a European market trip and Prague is one of the most popular destinations for UK travellers. A stunningly beautiful city in its own right, it has an authenticity that's very likely to induce that fuzzy festive feeling. 1....

Christmas market trips to Cologne

5th February 2021 by Europe a la Carte

I simply love them - steaming mugs of mulled wine, twinkling lights brightening up the dark nights, hot food stalls, rosy cheeks and big smiles… it’s the one of the best things about winter! One of my favourite places to enjoy Christmas is in Cologne, Germany. Not only is it a wonderful city the rest of the year - with good restaurants, an excellent modern art museum, the...

Salzburg's Christmas markets

8th February 2021 by Stuart

The fourth-largest city in Austria is probably best renowned for being the birthplace of Mozart, the setting for ‘The Sound of Music’, and for its intrinsic links to the Christmas season. With such a uniquely diverse set of attractions, in an astonishingly beautiful snow-capped mountain setting, and as the birthplace of the carol ‘Silent Night’, how could I not book a European Christmas market trip to this UNESCO World Heritage Site? Practically on the German border, Salzburg...

Christmas market trips to Nuremberg

5th February 2021 by Europe a la Carte

Last year about this time, I highlighted Christmas in Cologne as one of my wintertime favourites. This year I’ll mention another one of my top German Christmas Market hotspots: Nuremberg.Nuremberg is by many accounts the biggest and most popular Christmas markets in all of Germany. Set in the city’s main square, it is actually a few separate markets but like urban sprawl, the stands full of shiny toys, steaming mugs of mulled wine, and merchants serving up tasty dishes extends out down...
