For a truly Bavarian experience, a city break to Munich is a must. From the traditional architecture to the beer-heavy nightlife scene, the city is steeped in centuries of culture. The chequerboard blue and white colours of Bavaria are flown proudly around the city, where terracotta-topped rooftops and colourful building facades are a far cry from the skyscrapers of other cities. Marienplatz, the main square, is fronted by the huge Rathaus – or new town hall – which is one of the tallest points around. The most bustling bars are historic beer halls, where frescoed ceilings and old wooden benches set the tone. The English Garden is a must-visit, with its huge green space that sidles up to the edge of the Isar River and its streams and waterways. The Chinese Garden, a beer garden with a pagoda-style tower, is also worth a visit. Sports fans should head to the north of the city to the Olympiapark, where the iconic canopy-topped stadium from the 1972 Olympic Games is located. Finally, Munich is home to the only real Oktoberfest, where Bavarians don traditional dress and descend on the Theresienwiese for a spot of merriment, with big steins of beer served by different famous German breweries in their respective tents.

I love Berlin but have always had a soft spot for Munich. I love the beautiful architecture, strolling through its grand and wide boulevards and of course enjoying its rich beer garden culture. With the advent of Covid, Munich proved to be an ideal choice for a social distancing-friendly short break thanks to its 5,680 acres of public parks and long established tradition of historical gardens - there’s lots of wide open green spaces within the city for being socially distant....
