About Cape Verde

This archipelago in the central Atlantic Ocean, sits about 350 miles off the coast of west Africa

From the constant thrum of the bars and clubs in Mindelo, the country's capital, to the quaint local villages, towering mountains and long stretches of white sandy beaches, Cape Verde (or Cabo Verde) is a veritable paradise

With temperatures ranging from 26°C in February to 30°C in August, September and October, it's always a good time of year to visit, but most of the limited rainfall the country receives comes in September, so if you're looking to avoid the rain, June, July and August are you best bet (though the rain tends to come down in short, heavy spells, so its not likely to spoil things if you do get caught).

Their official language is Portuguese and the local currency is the Cape Verdean escudo (CVE).

With 4 international airports and 3 domestic, situated throughout the 10 islands, there are plenty of options when it comes to planning your trip. Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) is the main one with Nelson Mandela International (RAI), Aristides Pereira International (BVC) and Cesšria Évora (VXE) offering alternative arrival destinations.

With its local hospitality, constant musical thrum, glorious scenery and delectable cuisine, not to mention its climate and stunning beaches, there's really no reason not to book your next trip now.

When to visit

If you're planning a holiday in Cape Verde, our top picks for the best time to travel would be May

May

A true windsurfing country with a chilled-out, "Caribbean-esque" vibe. High temperatures, little rain and white-sand beaches combine to make the island nation a perfect place for some May down time
