About Porto
Porto, the largest city in northern Portugal, is a great destination for a city break. With its traditional architecture, cobbled lanes, grand Gothic buildings, iconic Azulejo tiles, and old wine cellars, there is plenty to explore. The city is also home to the Livraria Lello bookstore, which is said to have inspired the appearance of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter universe, and Praia do Carneiro beach, which is backed by a 16th-century fortress. There are also boat trips that take you beneath seven bridges that span the Douro River around Porto.

Day Trip from Porto to Foz do Douro
13th April 2023 by Twins that Travel
Prior to our own trip to Porto, I’ll admit that I knew embarrassingly little about the geography of this beautiful city. While I was (at least) aware that it hugged the shores of the magnificent River Douro, I hadn’t quite appreciated its proximity to Portugal’s wild Atlantic Coast. Lying just two miles from the river’s mouth, I soon discovered that Porto has a distinctly coastal side – an area known as Foz do Douro (meaning ‘Mouth of the River Douro’). Just a short bus or tram...

Allowing ourselves time to wonder the city’s many lanes and hillsides, we discovered quirky street-art, unexpectedly quintessential English country gardens and...

Porto food - We're eating and drinking around Porto, Portugal. Well as tourists, what did we actually eat on our own Porto food tour. We had to try the Francesinha, the Portuguese sandwich from Porto and yes it comes with chips! As well as the local food we actually went to a branch of McDonald’s, the McDonald's Imperial is the fanciest McDonald’s with unique art deco stained glass windows and chandeliers. One thing we do like is Port......
