A visit to Positano is like a dream come true. This one-time fishing village on the Amalfi Coast has become a playground for the rich and famous, with its pastel-hued houses and plush hotels clinging to its steep cliff face. The Mediterranean Sea, flecked with fishing boats, spreads out at its feet, while the town's streets are a maze of wide thoroughfares and bougainvillea-draped stairways. Here you can spend your days beach basking, cappuccino sipping, and label shopping, against a paparazzi-worthy hillside backdrop. The larger beach, Spiaggia Grande, has a harbour where you can sign up for watersports and boat trips, while Spiaggia del Fornillo is a less crowded pebbly stretch, popular with families. The 11th-century Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta stands tall in the centre of the cobblestoned Flavio Gioia square, and there are plenty of family-run trattorias and luxury clothes stores to explore. You can also take a day trip to nearby Sorrento, Amalfi, or even the mythical land of the Sirens, Capri, with daily ferries from the harbour on Spiaggia Grande. Holidays to Positano truly are a cocktail of the best of Italy.Books inspired by Positano
