A World Heritage listed city, enchanting Tallinn is a rare delight and has the best-preserved medieval old town in Northern Europe.
Food and drink
Dine in Tallinn's Old Town traditional restaurants and sample the smoked fish, especially trout (suitsukala), which is an Estonian speciality along with the famous sausages. Try the syrupy Vana Tallinn liqueur which is sickly sweet, very strong and an essential part of any Estonian table. It's best served in coffee, over ice, with milk or with champagne. Estonia's best beers are served in abundance, try the light Saku beer or the heavier Saare beer from the island of Saaremaa.
Shopping
A required stop on any shopping tour of Tallinn is the outdoor market on Müürivahe street where craftswomen sell knitted products. Even more intriguing is the Katariina Passage, where medieval-style workshops are run by artists. Onlookers watch as glasswork, ceramics and leather goods are created right before their eyes.
