About Luxor

Colloquially known as the worlds finest open-air museum, Luxor can be found on the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes surrounded by the ruins of the temples of Luxor and Karnak.

On the opposite banks of the Nile lie the temples, tombs and monuments of the West Bank Necropolis including the Valley of Kings and Valley of the Queens, sites that draw thousands of tourists from around the world every year.

Depending on current events and the political situation in Egypt, you could find yourself surrounded by visitors or experiencing the unique archeological heritage of this incredible ancient city and its sites in complete isolation. Either way, what awaits is quite breathtaking.

With its hot desert climate, Luxor offers day time temperatures between 25°C and 40°C, while the cooler nights drop to between 5°C and 25°C. With rainfall practically non-existent, Luxor is one of the sunniest cities in the world and some years has no rainfall at all. Great if you're looking for a dry hot getaway, not so good if your planning to stay longer, particularly if you're used to the drizzle of the UK.

Served by Luxor International Airport (LXR), the city has a modest ferry service, predominantly utilised by locals, for crossing the Nile, but available to tourists (al be it at 4 times the price). There is also a local railway and sometimes overly enthusiastic taxi service available throughout the city.

With so much to do and see from the temples to the tombs and with all that heritage, this is one for the bucket list. It's not a question of if, but when will you book your next trip? We suggest...now.

A complete guide to the Cairo to Aswan train (via Luxor)

25th August 2022 by The World in My Pocket

Travelling by train has been considerably glorified for many years in movies and books. It is a cost-efficient way of moving around, and also creates opportunities for authentic local experiences. I have travelled on the most famous trains around the world, including the Transsiberian, and every journey has opened doors into the local culture of the country I was in. It was on a night train from Beijing to Hong Kong where a Chinese man with the most perfect British accent taught me how to use...
