Best money saving apps for travel

I’m always on the lookout for ways to save money and get the most for my pounds. This is both when I’m booking a trip, but also when I’m physically away. Going away is expensive so every pound can make a difference.

Pretty much everyone has a smartphone nowadays (even my nan!) and there are some apps that can save you money on your travels.

Expedia

Let’s start with one of the biggest travel apps/ sites around; Expedia. They are an all-in-one search engine where you can look for flights, accommodation, car rental etc and the app will show you the best price across different providers.

You can purchase the travel deals directly through Expedia, or you can use the information it gives you and go directly to the hotel, airline etc. This is how I tend to use it as I prefer going direct to the source for booking.

Skyscanner

Skyscanner is my favourite travel app and I never book a flight without first checking it first. On the app you can search for the best priced airlines for a specific journey, but you can also be flexible and see the cheapest days and months to travel. Or locations that are the cheapest to book flights too.

A few years ago I wanted to book a city trip with a friend for a particular weekend so we found the three cheapest places we could go and picked from those. We ended up going to Prague and it’s probably not somewhere we’d instantly have picked, but we had a great time.

Saving money on a specific flight with Hopper

It can be hard to know exactly when to buy a flight. You don’t want to put it off and risk spending hundreds more. If you know exactly where and when you want to go then Hopper can help you pick the right time to book with their price predictions.

There’s no way of knowing when a flight price might go up or down but Hopper has a pretty high accuracy when it comes to predicting the prices of flights. When you search the site will predict when prices will increase and how much by. This way you can plan the best time to click buy and not risk waiting too long.

Planning to travel by train?

If you’re planning to do a lot of train travel then you may want to buy a travel pass to save on the costs. Eurail and Interrail are two platforms by the same company, Eurail is for non-European travel and Interrail is for Europe.

These apps will allow you to book train tickets and help you find real-time train schedules. You can even find out if you need to make a reservation or if you can just walk on with your rail pass.

If you’re looking to travel by train a lot in the UK look into the different railcards on offer. I have the Network railcard and it saves me so much money every year on train travel.

GuruWalk

Trips, tours and things to do when you’re away can work out pretty expensive when you go away, but there’s nothing better than a free walking tour. Walking around a new city will help you get your bearings but also show you more about the new place you’re in.

GuruWalk is a app that shows you free walking tours in the city you’re in with information such as the language it’s available in, the schedule and any themes for the tour for example historical, foodie etc.

What other apps do you use when travelling?
